OT: So, based on AAA games, if Metal Gear, LBP, GTA IV, Resistance 2 couldn't get folks motivated to buy more PS3s than 360s and Wiis, what will?

For the sake of adding something to the thread, no, Sony will not dominate '09. Since 2006, the PS3 has always had the "best" lineup according to its fans, yet somehow, they just can't seem to do well relative to its competition. Sony had most of '08 going for it until the holiday season and the $199 arcade took the wind out of all the progress it had made.

Regardless of what does happen, anyone who's been watching this console war for any length of time has to look back at the PS3 and say "Man, it had so much potential! What happened?" After reading excuse after excuse, and the passing of each "AAA" game, one has to wonder if anything is gonna change.

Of course it is. Sony will get back on track eventually, but it won't be this year. They're too far buried in their own mess to see the light quite yet. It will start with a price cut, and then that light will get a lot brighter.

If you use the word "dominate" for Sony's 09, it's pretty safe to say you are deluding yourself.

So... if you don't think that Sony will dominate 2009 then you dislike Sony?

Sony won't dominate. It should do better - 2008 wasn't a good year, and 2007 was terrible, so there isn't much direction save to go up. How far up will depend on the economy and the price cut (if and when it comes), though even the steepest cut being talked about would keep the console $50-100 above the "sweet spot".

The games will make PS3 owners happy, but nothing that is coming out will move large numbers of gamers to jump into Sony's boat the way Grand Theft Auto 3 did in 2001.

It could do better than the 360. It was already doing so last year prior to the 360 price cut and the economic collapse in September (fortuitous timing for Mircosoft). The matter will largely depend on whether Microsoft chooses to match the price cut (to what extent it can - it obviously can't cut by another $100), or instead add value to the current packages (perhaps by canning the Arcade and dropping the Premium and Elite to the Arcade and Premium prices respectively).

Best case scenario: They cut price early and shave between 1.5-2m consoles off the 360s lead.

Worst case scenario: Sony doesn't cut price, or does only a shallow cut, and the recession drags on, keeping Sony's sales stagnant, and MS increases its lead by another 1.5-2m consoles.

Most likely scenario: Sony cuts price, MS matches to a lesser degree, and Sony picks up about 1m on the 360 by the end of the year.

I am neutral as between MS and Sony.

Leaving the Wii out of it I think Sony has every chance of pulling off a very good year in 2009. In the game of chicken that is the HD battle,Microsoft was the one to blink first and most often, and it has few options left - Sony still has to make a move, and it will be interesting to see what, how and when it does.

Whatever it is,I don't expect it to be half-hearted, nor to be so obvious as a simple price cut.

It will be fascinating.

Well, Halo 3 or Gears of War 2 didn't get people to buy 360s and Wii Music and Animal Crossing certainly didn't drive people to get a Wii. A price cut always boosts sales more than any game release.
