Forums - Sales - PS3 Sales

Well it'd have to pull up it's sales... eventually you'd think.

Unless it ends up with the gamecube "we can't give these things away" scenario... but i don't think that will happen since unlike the gamecube it actually gets it's fairshare of multiplatform games... and if it got cheap enough the blu-ray player would play in again.

The question is... will it be in time to be in anything but 3rd.

I truly think PS3 is in some trouble. reasons:

1. Yes, the consoles moved units during the holidays. But we have not seen the bottom of this economy, and while gaming has survived with few scratches so far, they are forcasting double digit U.S. unemployment rates and more bad news. All the consoles sales are going to slow. It has to happen. People ponied up the cash for their kids' Christmas, but it's going to slow.

2. We can see the layoffs starting to hit the dev community. Sony as a corporation is in the worst financial shape of the Big 3. The yen has problems. The price cut is going to be tough - not big enough and not soon enough.

3. BluRay adoption will slow due to the economy as well. If the economy was booming the big 1080p TVs and the fancy version of movies would be flying off shelves. The difference is not enough for Joe Consumer to spend the cash.

4. Don't underestimate the advantage of established install bases. People will buy what their friends have so they can play with them/swap games with them etc. The 360 has that momentum - not to mention the Wii obviously.

5. Upcoming games look awesome! But they are pretty hardcore - Killzone 2 looks amazing, but the hardcore have bought the consoles already. The softcore aren't going to be sucked in by it.

I think Sony might close the gap with 360 a bit by the end of the year, but not what Sony fans want to see. My prediction is that 360 and PS3 sell similar numbers worldwide. And they will both be lower than what 360 did this year, unless we see amazingly crazy surprise games AND bigger than expected price cuts.

Can't we all just get along and play our games in peace?

Without a price cut; no.
With....maybe.

Firstly, you don't need to put your name at the end of your posts. We can see your name.

Secondly, you probably don't know this, but this thread has been made many times, so be prepared for some anger from a few members, and stay away from PS3 sales topics with no new information.

Thirdly, as soon as the price is cut, the (HD) momentum will shift in favour of the PS3. It will regularly outsell the 360. PS3 will reclaim Europe and possibly Others by the end of 2009, but America will still be 360 territory, with a slightly smaller difference. I'm guessing the price cut will be around the new fiscal year beginning in April 2009.

Heh.Time is PS3 answer. It will not win many week in totals against Wii.But when people start to turn to HD time,Ps3 is the answer. And when fimware updates keep bringin more features on it,it will sell.
Then comes games.
2 games that will surely change future of Ps3 if they come this year:Final Fantasy XIII and GT5.
There are lots of games that make impact, like Gow3,Uncharted2,KZ2,Infamous maybe...

Sony needs to survive this global recession as a corporation. In the next year they will have to make some serious decisions about wher their company can grow and can not. It would be ideal to grow their ps3 base in the United States, but I do not see that happening, in fact, it looks like the 360 will continue to dominate the no 1 consumer market on earth and will certainly grow its base in the "others" market at a faster pace than the ps3 until sony can cut the price. And from what sony executives are saying, the ps3 may not get a cut in price soon enough to have a real affect on longterm growth. What I mean is that sony may save face with a price cut, but it will not be enough to spur the kind of growth they need. Just being real.

Alright thanks for the advice Kantor!

- PS3 is still not making Sony any real money.
- PS3 has lost a LOT of exclusives to microsoft.

It should be coming to break even point very soon or maybe is there even at this moment

At point 2 it would be extremly hard to see it other way considering amount of exclusives PS had compared to xbox.

@PostModGuru - I don't want to rain on your US patriotic parade but Europe has AT LEAST  equal spending power on gaming as US.

Yea, honestly, Sony right now is just keeping in the race but once they put a price cut out there, it will be a lot more competitive.

The Ps3 isn't losing. It's coming third and that's very respectable. Hell if you come third in the Olympics they give you a medal!!!! Regardless of it's competition it is selling extremely well, but when thinking of it with it's competitors in mind, it was the most recently released, still has most of it's heavy hitting exclusives yet to come out, still has a price drop yet to come out and sony's consoles have always been future perfect consoles that do well over longer periods of time.

The 360 is showing how much a price drop does to your sales, and it's already released it's blockbuster titles and it's been out for longer so expect it's great success to be repeated on the Ps3 during '09.

The Wii is a phenomenon, I can't explain it other than the right price and the right marketing at the right time = something that spreads like a disease.
