It's really fucking sad that people don't play videogames to PLAY them anymore; most games are a power-point presentation practically today. Nobody seems to remember what made (and makes) NES games so fun.

Have you played Fire Emblem?  That is a game that has tremendous amounts of storyline, but I feel it still manages to focus on the gameplay aspects of the game.  It is clear that Nintendo understands what gaming is about, its too bad several internet bloggers think a game is no good unless it has high quality cut scenes and advanced shader effects.

@McStorym1, what should Guitar Hero/RockBand score?

As I said, any game without excellent writing and a storyline should not score higher than 5 or 6 at the most. Guitar Hero could easily fit in a storyline if the game creators took the time (up and coming rockstar plot, etc) same for most sports games. Most movies even with decent storylines get burned by critics and that mentality should be applied to games as well. That way game creators may be forced to finally start writing decent storylines which something much needed in the games industry today.

So your saying that a video game is bad if it lacks story?  I didn't realise that games should be focused on story instead of gameplay and fun.  I would much rather play a group GH/RB session than any MGS game.  I'm not trying to say that your ideas are wrong, you enjoy heavy storylines, but the lack of a story line doesn't make a bad game.  So games like GH, sports games, mindless shooters do not need any story to make them entertaining, in fact putting in a story line where it doesn't belong is worse than having no story.

What kind of story could they possibly have in GH/RB, crappy cover band to amazing cover band?

You can hardly call the 300 Blu Ray a "movie", the bonus features didn't include a single game.

PC + Wii owners unite.  Our last-gen dying platforms have access to nearly every 90+ rated game this gen.  Building a PC that visually outperforms PS360 is cheap and easy.    Oct 7th 2010 predictions (made Dec 17th '08)

Replace GH/RB with Tony Hawk and Cover band with skater, and you've got Tony Hawk Underground. =P

Adding a storyline to that and it's sequels had to be one of the worst ideas ever. Espeically in Underground 2 which should have just been titled Jackass: The Game. (Which someone went on to make actually.)

Frybread gets it.

Don Reisinger (CNET -- author of this piece) and Matt Peckham (PC World) are the two biggest technology columnist Wii haters out there.

I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble.

@BrainBox, I'm glad someone else gets the stupidity of adding story to a game that does not need it.

I'm sure I could come up with many great games that get by without any fleshed out storyline. I'm sure I could start listing some of the most popular franchises (sales wise) that are not story driven:
Mario
The Sims
Guitar Hero
Need for Speed
Madden
Tetris
FIFA

Actually just look at this Wikipedia link, at least half of the most popular franchises are not story driven games: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_video_game_franchises

Fleshing out the story is actually what a lot of people consider to be Sonics fall from grace.

by that logic, sports games arent games, neither are simulators, so the article is nonsense, Wii Sports is just as much a game as Gears of War and i love both games!

*attempts to add a story to Wii Sports*

In Wii Sports you play yourself as an amateur and over the hill tennis player in a quest to win Wimbledon because you fall in love with Kirsten Dunst.
*optional addition of Kirsten Dunst Mii*

One of (there are many) the things I hate about Mario Sunshine was the sudden inclusion of more storyline. Mario's going to jail for eco-terrorism? Peach is Bowser Jr's mother? There's a Bowser Jr? The hell was all that about? And the ending, with Bowser talking to his son, the fuck?

Guitar Hero III actually had crappy short cartoons in between sets of songs in the single player to try and create a story. I think those were kicked to curb in World Tour.

Shit, never played sunshine but reminds me of the stupid plot SMB2

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.
