But chess has a better one!

There was a chess game on the NES I think, where you had to actually go into a battle mode to fight for the space. Anyone remember it? That was pretty awesome

Battle Chess.
I had it on PC, and I set up the board however I liked so I could watch every possible battle animation. Some of the really unlikely ones, like the king killing a queen, are the best.

I guess all the time I spent playing atari and arcade games wasn't really what I thought it was.
Dare I point out that many of the greatest games lack story, Tetris, Dr. Mario, Bubble Bobble, Counter Strike, almost every sports game ever made, .... I'm sure I could go on all day, but I think I've made my point.

Not only does Bubble Bobble have a story, but it's FANTASTIC, and the game even says so:

I learned a lot from that fantastic story.

What kind of story could they possibly have in GH/RB, crappy cover band to amazing cover band?

That was the exact story of Guitar Hero III, but you left out the part where your manager tries to get you to sell-out and play some has-been show on MTV or something, and you say no, and he shows you the fine print on the contract you signed, at which point you find out he's Satan and owns your souls and you have to have a guitar battle in Hell to save your soul.
