Forums - Gaming - What were your overall expectations around the Wii and PS3's launch?

I believed that the Wii was going to be hard to find until two weeks after its first Christmas. After that, with the reports of millions being made I thought they were going to sit on shelves and be simple to find. Don't think I could have been more wrong about that one.

As for the PS3, I've been pretty right about that one so far. It's doing better than I had originally thought back then, but it's still in the same area at least.

I thought the PS3 would destroy everyone. Not to the same degree the PS1 and PS2 did, but still a substantial victory.

Even into 2007 I was still holding out significant hope this would happen and almost sold my Xbox 360 to purchase a PS3 with Lair.

I thought the Wii would make Nintendo a small profit ala the Gamecube and they would bow out in the 8th generation.

I never would have conceived the current situation, in which the Wii may become the highest selling console of all time, the Xbox 360 will likely outsell the PS3 for at least the next three years, and the maximum reasonable lifetime expectation for PS3 sales is 70 million, and that is optimistic.

At the time I remember that I wanted Nintendo to come back at the top but I had almost no hope of it happening, wow am I ever happy now hehe, Nintendo is back on top and the console even if the graphics are not as good as the other consoles is a lot of fun, especially with friends. When the price comes down I'll probably pick another one up just to finish SMG hehe.
The PS3 I tough was going to be selling more than the Wii even with the big price tag, I wanted to buy the PS3 at launch but none were available so I bought the 360 that was in special at futureshop and I'm very happy with it, the PS3 almost doesn't see any game time.

My favorite games for this gen:

1. Gears of War    2. MGS4    3. Killzone 2   4. Halo 3(Underated by many)      5. Mass Effect

I thought the Wii would come out and trash both systems. Then, the PS3 would pull far ahead (price cut plus exclusives) with the Wii following behind, leaving the 360 in a distant third. Then, Microsoft would get fed up and leave the console business. It actually sounded fairly realistic, even back in 2006 (after Sony's embarrassing E3 presentation).

I thought they'd all battle it out fairly evenly, since the niche that the Wii would appeal to would be like Gamecube + a few ten million.

Boy is my face red.

I thought the Wii would sell well, but die out after less than 2 years to average decent sales. While the PS3 would start slowly But work it's way to the top by end of Q1 09.... boy was I wrong...

4 ≈ One

I knew the PS3 was akin to the Titanic when they announced its launch price.

My response to the Wii was more along the lines of "Bwuh? Where's Mario?"

Honestly, I didn't care about sales at the time. That said, I knew the PS3 would sell terribly, to the point of almost not even mattering (which it did for the first year). Other than that, I just knew I was really looking forward to Wii.

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

"Ok, girl's trapped in the elevator, and the power's off.  I swear, if a zombie comes around the next corner..."

I had figured the PS3 would be on top again and when I watched this video, (turn down your speakers) I KNEW Nintendo had something right.

Now I'm glad I got a Wii at launch since they where very hard to come by for pretty much all of 2007.

@ Electro General

I seem to remember that a lot of PS fans called the 360 a failure since it didn't include Bluray, and claimed that the Wii was kiddy.

I do remember many people saying the 360 isn't as future proof as the PS3 due to not having Blu-Ray (for high definition gaming as well as movie playback). This I agree with this even and that's something else than what you stated.

As for the Wii being kiddy. Yes it's more kid content orientated, but I don't see that as a bad thing, according to Nintendo the bulk of GameCube owners were kids. It doesn't mean the console isn't fun and innovative.

I saw more hostility from 360 fans towards the Wii, this may be due to following Microsoft PR. Let's compare:

Microsoft PR statements:

- "We're positioning ourselves to be ready if, in fact, gamers find they're ready to graduate from a certain experience potentially with the Wii, either because it's limited on the type of gameplay that's available or the technology in that box"

Graduate? That implies Wii users are uneducated or something. Limited gameplay?

- Regarding Wii sales: "That is not sustainable, it's never been sustainable,"

- "We think that as soon as the Wii customer turns 14, they want something else."

Wow, just wow. That means all Wii fans here are 13 or below?

"And although Wii is almost a GameCube with a DVD drive"

Ouch...

Sony PR statements for comparison:

"Wii is a core gaming device. It' s a more fun, intuitive sort of product to pick up, where the PS3 is a broader entertainment solution"

"Wii is a wonderful device, but has a different target audience."

"We feel very confident that the PlayStation fan is going to wait until they can get a PlayStation 3. If they do pick up a Wii, it’s as more of a novelty.”

So, 3 positive Wii mentions from Sony.

Naughty Dog: "At Naughty Dog, we're pretty sure we should be able to see leaps between games on the PS3 that are even bigger than they were on the PS2."
