Forums - Gaming - Could Heavy Rain mean the demise of Quantic Dream

Hi again (after sometime)

I don't think this is to far fetched. Seeing as Free Radical and soon Factor 5 will find it demise by two major budget ps3 games.  That flopped in retail.

I surely don't hope it will happen but I will see Heavy Rain going the same way. Why?

- The enormous budget Quantic Dream must use ( even though backed by sony ?? ) and I don't see Sony saving it as they need saving ( more or less ) themself.

- Mirror's Edge ( although by gamers and critics ) very well recieved. Was also a new kind of gaming. ( visual wise) But bombed hard too ( and that was not even an exclusive)

- Seeing as it is a high budget game. Even 1 million copies sold will not be enough ( and we all know that the userbase   of the PS3 is not increasing heavely but much slower then other games )

- Like it or not it's a new IP and people seem to these days go for the known ips ( just look at cod waw) '

This is in no way a fanboy responds. I like to see it being a blast in both gaming and sales. But I don't think I will be to far off.

Anyone?

To be honest, I think it's pathetic to make a high-budget Adventure game in today's climate. It's double pathetic when you release that game in only 1 platform that's not even PC.

Their last game sold 700k from 3 platforms (PC/PS2/Xbox), so Sony needs to have given Quantic Dream a great deal, or else QD could be at great risk...

Advertising will probably make or break the game.

The hardcore will know all about it from the internet, magazines etc. The uninformed masses however will completely ignore it unless it's advertised well.

Unfortunately, I have to agree with this. I love me my adventure games, and am really hoping Heavy Rain turns out well, but let's not delude ourselves: it's a very small niche, one not big enough to support a big-budget release. Still, I suppose I'll take what I can get, for now.

It could be very dangerous, in theory, if it is does not sell very well. The project they've outlined sounds enormously expensive.

I agree..

But do you think Sony will risk an enormous advertising campaign for a thirth party game . When they did so for Lair and it failed miserably? I don't think Sony can and will take that risk.

It's one of the most promising PS3 titles, but I'm afraid it will bomb like hell. Plus it doesn't exactly look like a cheap game...

So yeah, definitely a possibility. Somehow I don't think Sony is in a bailout mood atm.

Lair had a major ad campaign... since when? And Level 5 and Free Radical aren't gong bankrupt becaus of the ps3 but their selves.

PS3 games have proven to have some pretty serious legs. Look at the numbers for Heavenly Sword. Heck Haze and Lair actually haven't done that bad at this point, either.

I doubt Heavy Rain will cause QD to go under, although it is a niche genre, IMO. You could say the same thing about Alan Wake -- except of course that AW has been in development for a lot longer, as far as I know.

LAIr & HAZE died because of their reviews

If a 2-D platformer & a new IP like LBP which according to people "hype was mainly on the interwebs" is about to do 2 Million in the first 3 months of release....I don't see why HEavy Rain can't be profitable
