Forums - Gaming - Survey:Video Game based Movie Quality!

Ok, this is a survey I am doing for a class project(serious business) for my Research Methods class. I am trying to get a general consensus of what people think about video game based movies. We have seen a few over the years such as....

  • Super Mario Bros.
  • DOA
  • Double Dragon
  • Street Fighter
  • Mortal Kombat
  • Mortal Kombat Anihilation
  • Doom
  • Resident Evil 1,2,3
  • Tomb Raider
  • Bloodrayne
  • Hitman
  • Max Payne
  • Silent Hill

These are all the ones(I can think of) that have been released. As well as some that are rumored to be up and coming...

  • Tekken Movie
  • Legend of Chun Li

What do you thing of the quality of these movies and the ones to come? Why do you think of them as a success or failure and what needs to be done to alter that?

They were all pretty shit, though I liked Street Fighter and Double Dragon (SCOTT WOLF!) in a so-bad-they're-good way. I'm sure the forthcoming game movies will be shit as well. I do hold out a bit of hope for the Bioshock and Gears of War flicks.

Maybe part of the problem is that it's difficult to take an IP and introduce it to a new audience while keeping true to canon enough to please the fans of the game. Also, what works in a video game often makes for a pretty lame movie. Games typically don't have amazing writing, and even the ones with the very best stories aren't really up to snuff versus the very best movies. We're simply more forgiving of this because of the immediacy of interactive entertainment.

But the biggest problem, really, is that all of those movies were just stupid cash-ins.

As for what they can do... I dunno. More Scott Wolf.

bump. need opinions, would really appreciate it.

Metroid. We need a properly done Metroid movie. As long as Samus wasn't turned into a generic space marine like every other American action movie. No, it would have to be very subtle.

It would be much easier to do Zelda right, of course. Just look at the IGN Zelda Movie "trailer". It was awesome and perfectly balanced between serious and fantasy.
