I see a hammer with the word "ban" inscribed in the distance.
@sega4life: Wii Sports is a demo disc... and much more. It's a fun game for starters (well, at least the tennis part is).

if people are still playing wii sports in 2028 then i'll agree , imo the two aren'tt comparable. |
As a Nintendo fan and someone who values what Wii Sports did to the industry, this is a good point.

Cnet.com released an article today implicitly claiming that Cnet, the web's alleged go-to place for all things tech, has some sort of legitimacy.
According to the article, CNet.com writer Don Reisinger said that "Wii Sports is nothing more than a proof of concept that aims at helping new Wii converts get the feel for the console's interaction mechanism."
To be honest, I'm upset that this day has come. I was sure it would happen eventually, but I never believed that it would happen so soon and at the hands of a professional website like CNet.
The respectability of the gaming press has been vanquished by the Wii and there's really nothing we can do about it. But does even having a degree in journalism make you a real journalist?
I don't see how anyone can say that. Regardless of their degree, most gaming journalists are nothing more than a below-average forum poster that aims at getting millions of eyeballs to read their material.
More importantly, I don't think gaming journalists are really "journalists" in the conventional sense. They lack ,maturity, offer no measurable contribution to most discussions, and boast only the most basic analysis.
Sure, they're professionals, but I don't think they can be compared on the same level with people like Walter Cronkite, or any reporter from Nightline.
I'm more than a little upset by the news of gaming journalists taking any time from their readers. Suffice it to say that in my mind, regardless of title, gaming journalists will never compare to any fine journalist and to compare it as such is an insult to those journalists.
It's not that I dislike the gaming press or haven't enjoyed my time reading their works. I just don't see how it can be held in the same high regard as even my high school newspaper.
I'm happy for CNet that they are now considered to be professionals, but we should never compare that "press" to the countless others that truly fit the billing.

How many will it take to qualify as "playing"? Not many play Super Mario Bros. at this point, either.

Going back and reading this for any necessary edits, I'm a little scared by how easily this translated...

I disagree mobile phone , pocket pc , pc & psp emulators , countless smb flash games. i played smb at least 15 times last year , maybe it's only a handfull that play the classic but it has proly stood the test of time way better than wii sports could.

Well, you've seen through the charade, you've shown us all that the emperor has no clothes, you've paid attention to the man behind the curtain. Tens of millions were suckered by Nintendo into buying a Wii just to play a demo.
Now go forth, my son, and spread the word to the unwashed and ignorant masses. Let them know that they've been duped into thinking they're playing a Real Game. Open their eyes, do what GTA IV failed to do, and end this foolish Wii Fad once and for all!

All right. We'll meet back up in twenty years to find out how wrong you are.
