According to the article, CNet.com writer Don Reisinger said that "Wii Sports is nothing more than a proof of concept that aims at helping new Wii converts get the feel for the console's interaction mechanism." To be honest, I'm upset that this day has come. I was sure it would happen eventually, but I never believed that it would happen so soon and at the hands of a professional website like CNet. The respectability of the gaming press has been vanquished by the Wii and there's really nothing we can do about it. But does even having a degree in journalism make you a real journalist? I don't see how anyone can say that. Regardless of their degree, most gaming journalists are nothing more than a below-average forum poster that aims at getting millions of eyeballs to read their material. More importantly, I don't think gaming journalists are really "journalists" in the conventional sense. They lack ,maturity, offer no measurable contribution to most discussions, and boast only the most basic analysis. Sure, they're professionals, but I don't think they can be compared on the same level with people like Walter Cronkite, or any reporter from Nightline. I'm more than a little upset by the news of gaming journalists taking any time from their readers. Suffice it to say that in my mind, regardless of title, gaming journalists will never compare to any fine journalist and to compare it as such is an insult to those journalists. It's not that I dislike the gaming press or haven't enjoyed my time reading their works. I just don't see how it can be held in the same high regard as even my high school newspaper. I'm happy for CNet that they are now considered to be professionals, but we should never compare that "press" to the countless others that truly fit the billing. |
Going back and reading this for any necessary edits, I'm a little scared by how easily this translated...
