Forums - Gaming - So is the PS3 the modern dreamcast?

No. But both systems were awesome.

Not really. Reasons:

1) PS3 is Sony's fail, while Sega shot itself in the foot years before the Dreamcast launched - if anything the DC was proof Sega had gotten its act together, albiet too late.

2) The Dreamcast signaled the end of Sega as a console maker - that doesn't appear to be the case for Sony.

3) In addition to their past failures, the biggest reason the DC failed was Sony's hype for the PS2. Sony convinced most gamers the PS2 would be teh awesome, with the greatest graphics ever, a brilliant launch lineup, and it could probably do your taxes and clean your home, too. All of this ended up being bullshit, especially in the first 18 months of the PS2's life. However the damage was done and many, many people stayed far away from the DC. Compare this to Sony, which entered the PS3 era with a sterling reputation, launched with (again) rediculous hype, but the PS3 failed (compared to expectations) because of their poor choices in console design, not because they were castrated by a console that wouldn't hit the market for another year.

Shenmue was badass, but you guys can't act like Sega had THAT strong of first party support. They had strong first party support, but Sony can definitely match if not beat it.

I agree. The Dreamcast was awesome, but it wasn't that great.

no, the dreamcast only sold 10m or so consoles, the PS3 has already hit 19m and should easily hit 30m next year, the PS3 also has a good chance imo of selling 50m lifetime, so no the PS3 is not as big a flop as the DC, it is a failure only in terms of PS1/PS2 sales and market share, otherwise its a top console with alot going for it and more than enough sales to make it viable for multi-plat releases and some good exclusives, and you have to talk sales when comparing the two as although they both are last in there generations, the PS3 has done considerably better than the DC and has more features, more backing and more sales potential

In many ways the PS3 is a combination of both the Saturn and the Dreamcast, with all three being fine machines.
The big difference being that Sony has deeper pockets, and Sega was broke when they released the Dreamcast.
The Dreamcast did not fail, Sega failed the Dreamcast!
Could you imagine if Sony had announced in January 2008 that they were only going to support the PS3 until the end of the year.
That is exactly what happened to the Dreamcast, after only 17 months on the market in North America.
Will the PS3 owners still rave about their games 10 years from now, I hope so.
With the PS3 just now reaching the same lifespan as the Dreamcast, it would be very interesting to compare their games. Of course that would be the subject of another thread.

Here is what the DC had.. the sequel to VF2, VF3tb.. probably the most successful arcade game in japan with an insane fan following.

Shenmue.. the most realistic"sandboxish" game for its time-weather system/daytime system et al.

The first "true" 3D sonic game-sonic adventure

sega rally2..sequel to one of the most popular arcade rally game.

Ecco the dolphin-sequel to genesis classic

Ikaruga& Rez- anyone whose played the LIVE version knows what im talking bout

Jet grind radio

Crazy taxi

Sega GT/ferrari F355

Seaman- pet sim.. pretty popular in japan

crazy taxi

samba de amigo

space channel 5

sega sports titles

I think the DC had a lot of awesome titles- some great 3rd party classics, RE:CV,Soul calibur, power stone, dead or alive 2,grandia 2

Actually looking at the amount of variety of titles sega produced- and almost all the titles mentioned above were atleast AA if not AAA quality- I dont think the PS3 can compete with this sort of variety, not yet- not in 17 months after launch. DC was the console to own if you loved games.

@steroid : the saturn WAS NOT the least powerful console of its time. It was ironically the playstation. In terms of raw numbers the saturn had more power. It was however terribly designed, poorly optimised and used quads for 3D-most programmers were used to triangles even though quads were more efficient and aesthetic. Playstation had a weaker CPU, RAM but made up for it with easier programming environment and more optimisation for 3D games. Saturn kicked PS when it came to 2D however. And anyone who has played the BIG3 (VF2, sega rally, virtua cop2) and nights can easily confirm that the Saturn could have easily competed with the playstation when pushed.

I do think the ps3 is a good system but its focus is different from the dreamcast's. The PS3 is more geared towards movie playback, social communities(home) and games. The DC's primary focus was games with an online edge.

Doubt is not a pleasant condition, but certainty is absurd.

b. a nintendo developed game that has a "M rating"

c. redesgined PS controller

d. SEGA back in the console business

e. M$ out of the OS business

Don't think so, it sells much better than all the failed systems. And the damn thing is still at 400$. Unless Sony really kills it (for example by keeping their "value-added" strategy till 2010) it will be quite successful unlike Dreamcast, XBOX or Gamecube. Not PS1 or PS2 successful obviously.

lol this.. stupid value added XD

Check out my game about moles ^

The main diffrence is that the mighty Sega Dreamcast died a LEGEND.

The ps3 won't.

all i can say is that i enjoy my ps3 as much as i did my dreamcast and thats saying alot cuz the DC was my fav. console...

No. PS3 is the new N64

- successor to two gens of dominance
- no backwards compatibility
- late launch
- uber CPU compared to competition
- GPU named 'reality'
- different media
