Forums - Sony - The next Sony Console should be a pure games machine and nothing else.

The only thing I'm sure is that PS4 won't be as gorgeous as PS3 at its release date.

Lets, be honest, Sony had a pretty good strategy and if they had been successful on the get go, they would have been swimming in money now.
If Sony had gone games only, they would probably further lose out to Nintendo and Microsoft. They would not be able to compete with Nintendo's innovation, or the Xbox's media hub. if it were not for the Blu-ray, the PS3 would have probably been off the market by now, though the lower price point may have resulted in a few more sales. On the other hand, if it was not for the PS3, Bluray would have probably failed by now to due to the fact the HDTV was equally as good and cheaper.

Sony makes electronics and it would be financially unwise not to try to synergize different products in any way. Had they not done this this time round, both the PS3 and Blu-Ray would be off the market by now.

What has sony learned? To win in the format war, you need to have the casual market. Say what you want about hardcore gamers, but the casual market is 100 times as large as the hardcore market, and probably have more to spend as they have (parents with) jobs rather than sitting at home playing games 20 hours a day, (not to mention the fact that a hardcore gamer is more likely to illegally acquire games).

And you will not get the casual market by charging $600 for something that the casual consumer can buy for half the price for something that does exactly the same thing.

Gosh, had the PS3 cost $250 at launch, and had motion controlling, Nintendo and Xbox woudl probably be bankrupt by now!!!

I love my ps3, I disagree, id rather have a quality all in one device, than have several devices.

Well Sony backed this gen on most people like you and they got burnt badly.  Most people just want to play video games.  They already have PCs to do all the other stuff.  Unless Sony can find a way to make their console extremely affordable with all the extras they are bound to cut down on the features in their next console.  What is absolutely certain is they won't be daft enough to release a console that costs $600.

nice post sparkit34, sony did not have to include Blu-ray as sony do not own blu-ray (in fact its owned by 19 or 20 businesses). And if sony included a DVD or HD-dvd drive the cost would be half what it is (saying if sony didnt invest in blu-ray at all). If sony when for gamers first, I bet it be at number 2 right now with 30 million sales.

PC gaming rules.....

Please God, Sony don't tack on a 400 dollar Red-Ray machine or something, pointlessly to your next console, in an effort to build your other IP's up at the expense of the Playstation brand.............................again.

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

Yeah that will be a great decision. Adding features is never bad if you do not make existing features worse with them. Nintendo didn't win this gen until now because their Wii is 10 times less powerful, it didn't win because its SD or because the Wii is so much inferior regarding media playback or networking.

It did win because it has had innovative controls that managed to capture the audience and a casual and kid-friendly software approach that is simply not rivalled by Microsoft or Sony. Microsoft didn't stand a chance of getting that market and Sony who had them last gen forfeited its chance with a 600$ price and no software to speak off for 10 months.

Sony had a crap strategy (based on the assumption brand name was all they needed to succeed).  That's why they find themselves in such a difficult position now.  The world doesn't need and wasn't ready for a $600 console that tries to be a PC.

If Sony had gone games only, they would probably further lose out to Nintendo and Microsoft.

If they had gone games only and released a $250 console Xbox360 would probably have died off by now and PS3 would probably be neck and neck with Wii in sales.  All the third parties backed Sony before this gen started and only slow PS3 sales (and a bit of Microsoft dollars) has forced them to go multiplatform.

if it were not for the Blu-ray, the PS3 would have probably been off the market by now.

If not for blu ray Sony would have been able to release a console people could afford and it would have sold much more than it has.

If it was not for the PS3, Bluray would have probably failed by now

Agree 100%

Exactly.  But you are contradicting yourself.  The reason Sony could not release an affordable console was due to Blu-Ray.  You suggest a $250 console would have been the right choice but at the same time are saying Blu Ray was the right choice.  What Sony should have done was release a console without Blu Ray and things would be very different now.  Of course though neither Microsoft or Nintendo could go bankrupt though.  The success of DS alone is enough to make Nintendo an extremely profitable company and Windows means Microsoft will always have too much money.

If Sony continue to sell the ps3 at the current rate, i dont think they will be changing much

I hope my 360 doesn't RRoD

That would be a bad decision for Sony, Playstation brand is weaker then before and many PS3's were sold primaraly /or because of the Blu-Ray drive in there, creating a Pure gaming machine by Sony next Generation it would share the faith of the GC. Multimedia options are important for playstation, just like with the PSP, pure gaming PSP wouldnt sell 40 million.

freedquaker said: Kinda right kinda wrong. If PS3 were released at $250, PS3 sales would be much higher, and 360 and Wii sales would be lower, thats true. It would be unclear who would have more sales, wii or ps3, thats also true. 360 would die in Japan and fade away in Europe, thats also true. But It would still not die in the States and be close or maybe still marginally in front of the PS3 because it was released first, its much easier to program for, there are original xbox fans and it would probably be priced lower than ps3. In short, it would be a much better situation for sony, possibly profitable, a much worse situation for microsoft, probably never profitable, and a worse situation for nintendo, most definitely profitable but much less so (due to probable price cut to around $200 and fewer sales of hardware and software).
