Lets, be honest, Sony had a pretty good strategy and if they had been successful on the get go, they would have been swimming in money now.
If Sony had gone games only, they would probably further lose out to Nintendo and Microsoft. They would not be able to compete with Nintendo's innovation, or the Xbox's media hub. if it were not for the Blu-ray, the PS3 would have probably been off the market by now, though the lower price point may have resulted in a few more sales. On the other hand, if it was not for the PS3, Bluray would have probably failed by now to due to the fact the HDTV was equally as good and cheaper.
Sony makes electronics and it would be financially unwise not to try to synergize different products in any way. Had they not done this this time round, both the PS3 and Blu-Ray would be off the market by now.
What has sony learned? To win in the format war, you need to have the casual market. Say what you want about hardcore gamers, but the casual market is 100 times as large as the hardcore market, and probably have more to spend as they have (parents with) jobs rather than sitting at home playing games 20 hours a day, (not to mention the fact that a hardcore gamer is more likely to illegally acquire games).
And you will not get the casual market by charging $600 for something that the casual consumer can buy for half the price for something that does exactly the same thing.
Gosh, had the PS3 cost $250 at launch, and had motion controlling, Nintendo and Xbox woudl probably be bankrupt by now!!!
