Forums - Gaming - Better to buy a console or a PC for gaming?

Doesn't everyone have both these days - surely everyone has a PC by now?

So use that for strategy games & such & the consoles (with the 360 now around £100 & the Wii at £160 (in the UK at least) you can get more than one!) for the other stuff!

On the price issue, it certainly used to be that console games were seriously more expensive than their PC brethren, but this last Christmas has seen many top console titles going for under £20 (Resistance 2, Tomb Raider Underworld, Far Cry 2, Motorstorm 2 to name but a few) and with a pretty good back catalogue 360 titles can be picked up for that as an RRP!)

I do like the openness of PC games, with the possibility of user contributed content but even that is being addressed (certainly on the PS3 with Little Big Planet, Unreal Tournament III & Far Cry 2 - with some great new levels!). Hopefully Microsoft will loosen the leash a little on the 360 or it could find itself in a losing position in the long term (what with charging for online play too!)

Seems like I've brought up a whole other set of issues rather than the which is best, oh well, start of a new year and all that...

PC's dont have good exclusives though. is Gears of War 2 on the PC? how about Final Fantasy XIII? O.o

Consoles has exclusives that PC just wont get sometimes.

And there are no exclusives on PC? :D

1. lol do you have any idea what you are talking about ? i know your a huge pc fanboy but i know a lot of pcs too. Ofcourse it's all about what happens on your pc but you can't control all incomming and outgoing traffic (even with attempts such as firewalls) not to mention DRM and software installing shit on your pc. Pcs are unrealiable and i know this. It's a fact. I'm not saying they will crash and burn.. but they will crash, overload and crash. Blue screen of hell ? a ddl file missing so you have to reinstall windows ? etc. Dude don't always act like pcs are flawless. Yes a lot of the problems are caused by users but not all of them, and certainly not many of the fatal ones.

"I know you are a rocket scientist, but I DO KNOW more than you about rockets!" Uhm...? :D

Drm -> one single crack...

Software installing? ... Cars tend to need gas too. Isn't that weird?!

Unreliable? ... Uhm, I have 4 pcs two of them are from 90's and they are still working. (Actually they are set up as servers and are 24/7 up. Can you do that with X360? ;)  )

Crash? Thats what you get when you clutter your windows with all kind of crap. Overload? , Can you explain what you mean by this?

Ddl? Oh, you mean dll? Too bad games today come on dvds and tend to install those for you. Its so sad that you don't have to hunt those anymore. :/

PCs are flawless. Operating systems and users aren't. :)

2. I wanted to tell he she should get the ps3 and she wouldn't have any reliability issues but i didn't want to come off as a fanboy.

Oh, youre on the sonys side. That explains everything...

3. Yeah it's really neat to lay on a bed with mouse and keyboard. Ofcourse you can always buy a controller but that defy's the point of a pc having a superior control scheme.

Point is that you can use any controller there is. Even wiimote is already cracked to work on pc. And of course with key bindings etc. you can play even fps with dance mat. :D

no ? so what. Harddisks have flaws that after a certain amount of spins they will fuck up. Not that they will die because of it, but they will fuck up.

Crash? Thats what you get when you clutter your windows with all kind of crap. Overload? , Can you explain what you mean by this?

If you use windows for more than just a few things you need to clutter it.. atleast in some form or the other .. unless you have pcs specicially to use for each thing seperately.

Ddl? Oh, you mean dll? Too bad games today come on dvds and tend to install those for you. Its so sad that you don't have to hunt those anymore. :/

yes i meant dll lol my bad. Pcs aren't flawless... Hardware can always break down. Operating systems are unreliable, that's was my main point with the reliability issues, if you use the mainstream windows atleast, which is what i do. I like to use my 3ds max and stuff without too much hassle.

2. I wanted to tell he she should get the ps3 and she wouldn't have any reliability issues but i didn't want to come off as a fanboy.

What ? Because i like playstation that makes me a certain type of person ? no. Massive fail from you right there. Who the hell are you to judge based on my affiliations.

I know you can use the wii mote.. i made a ninja volleyball game with a few other guys designed around using it once.

My point was simply that shio usually explains pcs superiority with the "keyboard and mouse" example, and in this case it wouldn't be the best of options.

Responded in bold.

I'm not against you though because i'm a pc gamer too, but i also like to game on my consoles, especially my ps3. It's just relaxing and nice.

One thing you need to realise is that there is a billion different combinations of pcs out there, so you can't possibly say that pcs are reliable as it's down to each fucking individual machine. And that's a fact.

Just seems to be more cost effective to go console, otherwise, you're just spending your money upgrading the processor, video card, and memory capacity.

If you even have to ask that question, then the vastly superior answer for you, is stick with consoles.

No one without at least 2 years experience in building, and actively working on computers should even consider PC gaming as an alternative for an HD console.

...and yes, this is probably the only right answer in this thread. I'm actually quite astute.

Anybody wanna argue with me?

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

Right now, just console, but that may change in the future.  idk, consoles just seem more fun right now, though I did play PC games alot back in the day.

Same here for the average & slightly hardcore console is better but the pc is were it's at in terms of the vast variety of games  i think its more costly for pc gaming i never liked the game installs either especially wen there were problems installing it do to either lack of my knowledge or poor pc performance would like to see pc games like the sims and sim city games come to the consoles

Depends on what you want.

I grew up playing those daily RPGs on BBSs back in the day all the way through having a LAN party when the Quake beta came out, teaming up with a laser designator and mortaring bases in Tribes, through getting UT2004 and grabbing nodes. Great games all but I am into a more laid back atmosphere now a days and consoles are a much better choice for me.

I had a 5 hour Halo 3-a-thon about 2 days ago where me and a couple of old college buds partied up and chatted. Lounged on my sofa, turned on the tv(saw nothing good had been recorded on the DVR), turned on the XBox, game was up in a couple seconds, saw my buds were online, sent invites, played some Halo. Lots of fun. Lack of mouse and keyboard doesn't bother me because everyone is using the controllers as well. I am proficient enough with them that mouse and keyboard are not missed.

Well... the way I see it. It all depends on "What you want"

Who's with me???

I prefer consoles myself though.

You obviously don't know enough if you are having problems with spyware, viruses, or Blue Screens. In the past 2 and a half years I haven't had an occurance of even one instance of any of those. Only problem I have with my PC right now in fact is that I may have overheated my video card making it act up every so often when i really push it. Reliability is NOT an issue if you know the very basics of how to use a PC. Also I don't see how you "have to clutter" your PC to use it at all. Outside of the apps I use for study/work and my games, my PC is squeky clean and there is nothing interrupting or running while I don't know.

I think that is a good way to sum it up.  Also, unless you are into a hardcore set niche the PS has its share of games for, one needs to seriously ask whether or not the investment is worth it.  To get the best in PC gaming, you need to fork out big bucks, or make your own computer.

What I get a feeling when I am around a die-hard PC gamer on forums like this, is that they are Geeksquaders who aren't at work, and take pride in frame rates, and love to put down people who don't have the same dedication to hardware as they do.

@Staude

What ? i meant unwanted spyware.

Why are you installing unwanted software in first place? :D

Didn't you say that you have good knowledge about computers?

no ? so what. Harddisks have flaws that after a certain amount of spins they will fuck up. Not that they will die because of it, but they will fuck up.

Newsflash, PS3 has a harddrive!

yes i meant dll lol my bad. Pcs aren't flawless... Hardware can always break down. Operating systems are unreliable, that's was my main point with the reliability issues, if you use the mainstream windows atleast, which is what i do. I like to use my 3ds max and stuff without too much hassle.

And consoles do not break? :D

What ? Because i like playstation that makes me a certain type of person ? no. Massive fail from you right there. Who the hell are you to judge based on my affiliations.

Well, as I have said before sony fanatics are more like religious fanatics, who just live in their own world where sony is the god and PS3 jesus. And of course they are making fool out of themselves.

My point was simply that shio usually explains pcs superiority with the "keyboard and mouse" example, and in this case it wouldn't be the best of options.

Can you use keyboard & mouse in every console game? Can you use any device in any console game? Sure keyboard and mouse users tend to rape pad users in fps games, but still theres games like racing where you would do much better with wheel controller for example.

One thing you need to realise is that there is a billion different combinations of pcs out there, so you can't possibly say that pcs are reliable as it's down to each fucking individual machine. And that's a fact.

So if I buy a car that has been made in 80's and it works only 1% of time it means that cars are unrealiable? Humm... Logic? Where is it? :P

Anyway, of course theres crappy hardware too. Just don't buy it. *cough* acer *cough* fujitsu *cough*
