Forums - Microsoft - Unwire Your Xbox 360 for Only 40 Bucks

Popular Science has published a tutorial on how to get your Xbox 360 online wirelessly without having to buy the official Xbox 360 Wireless Network Adapter. The DYI hack consists in replacing the firmware of a wireless router to make it work as an Xbox 360 wi-fi adapter. The editor at PopSci used an old wireless router he acquired for $40 on Amazon, but you can find a used wireless router on eBay for as low as $15.

This 50-foot Ethernet cable snaking all the way through my apartment from the router in the bedroom to my Xbox 360 in the living room? That's how I used to play videogames online. The Xbox doesn't come with wireless capability built in, and I didn't want to shell out the extra $100 -- a third the price of the console itself -- for Microsoft's wireless adapter. Third-party wireless bridges cost a bit less but are still pricey. Finally, though, I found a way to ditch the giant wire with a solution that cost me only 40 bucks. If you already have a wireless network set up in your home, you can make a second, cheap router function as an Xbox adapter by replacing its firmware with free software called DD-WRT. As long as you download the right version, almost any brand of router will work. I bought an older model on Amazon, but you can get a used one on eBay for $15 or less -- well worth it for the pleasure of blasting annoying teenagers in Denmark in Halo 3.

  1. Before buying a router for this project, check dd-wrt.com to make sure the specific model is supported. If so, download the right version of the software to your computer.
  2. Follow the installation instructions on dd-wrt.com for your specific router model. This may require you to change your computer's network settings. Connect the router to your modem and your computer with Ethernet cables. Update the router's firmware with the DD-WRT software.
  3. Enter the router's IP address in your computer's Web browser, which should now bring up the DD-WRT interface. Change the router's settings to "client mode." This enables it to receive an Internet signal from your original router.
  4. Disconnect the cables, and restore the original network settings on your computer. Place the router near the Xbox 360 console, and connect it with a short Ethernet cable. Turn on the console, and connect to Xbox Live.

Nice. About time. Thanks for the article.

I think this needs to be stickied!

It will help get this information out there to people who want it. I mean it doesn't sound any more complicated than replacing a HDD for the PS3 and thats considered doable.

Tease.

Personally I think replacing a HDD is ridicilously easy, at least on the PC. It should be a lot easier on the PS3 as there shouldn't be that many cables. Anyway, flashing a new firmware is always a bit more of a hassle and harder to get into, though I suppose it's not that hard once you get the hang of it. I just believe the beginning's the hardest part.

Anyway, it's a good thing there's finally a way to get WLAN without buying one of those terribly overpriced M$ things. Now we should see whether they let this be or come up with something like they apparently did with non-M$ HDDs...

No. No 360 is wireless. The PS3 has wireless models, and the Wii is wireless, but no 360 is wireless out of the box. You have to buy an adapter for it.

you can do it for free if you have a laptop or computer nearby that has wireless. Just bridge the wireless connection to the wired connection. Go into control panel. Manage your connections. Click the wireless connection and the wired one while holding ctrl so both are selected. Right click and select bridge connections. Plug your 360 into the computer and have the 360 automatically detect everything.
