Popular Science has published a tutorial on how to get your Xbox 360 online wirelessly without having to buy the official Xbox 360 Wireless Network Adapter. The DYI hack consists in replacing the firmware of a wireless router to make it work as an Xbox 360 wi-fi adapter. The editor at PopSci used an old wireless router he acquired for $40 on Amazon, but you can find a used wireless router on eBay for as low as $15.
