If we did a premium login for $50 per year that removed all ads how many people would seriously be interested? Unless it were in the many hundreds then there is no way we could do it...

At the end of the day you can't please everyone. It is a common thing across all major websites that click rates on standard banner ads are going down and down and many advertisers are now only keen on doing things like skins (the background image) and interstitial ads. Go and visit 1up, Gamespot, IGN and you see the same kinds of things I'm afraid - unless we can come up with another way to support the site (premium memberships etc) then we have no choice so please stop moaning. A non-intrusive background image for a RE feature on a game site shouldn't really be a problem for anyone - who knows, some of you may actually be interested in it, same with the WOW stuff and so on... like I say some people are never happy.

I think it's pretty cool actually :P And it helps to keep the site fresh and looking relevant.

The only issue I have is with spyware and viruses. I once caught something and I was very reluctant to come back here.

I thought i should comment the "donate" button. It does sound like a good idea from the surface, but in reality, usually when you see a "donate" button, it gives you an image someone wants to con you.
The button may not be a problem with the existing members, but it definately would turn new members off.

"premium membership" wouldn't be that good of an idea either, unless there's some extra content added for the current content, keeping the basic features still free.

In the end, ultimately the best thing to do, would be to get the number of users up.

I have been seeing alot of ads lately...

The Theater in HOME convinced me to buy the RE Blu-Ray, LOL. Showed a trailer and a clip of the movie I believe. A few weeks back I got the urge to watch Twilight because of HOME. The trailer was meh, but the Music video that followed was awesome

What about providing and charging for marketing research packets, like DFC Intelligence (http://www.dfcint.com/index.php)? They currently charge like $2000 for video game market data, you could probably do the same for a lower amount, like $500 to $1000 and get in touch with a lot of big businesses that are doing video game market research.

Not only does it help provide money to pay for the site, but it makes the site look a lot more professional. Unless, of course, people preferred the screaming iPhone ads, the annoying smiley ads, and those flat-out disturbing softcore porn ads. This site has always been fairly slow, and if better advertisements can help pay for things like new servers, I don't see the problem.

It's a lot less annoying than Gamefaqs.

@ioi: I actually was thinking a step further in a hope, that the amount of users would use the Amazon via VGC. Basically what you'd need, would be some sort of immaterial content to sell (as an idea, a little similar to selling ringtones to visitors etc.). After TheSource practices a while more making his analyses, maybe you could sell them for people.

I don't mind the background ad honestly as much as the previous problem of redirecting ads. As for the RE Degeneration ad itself you can say its partially working as I didn't even know it existed until I saw it here and I'll most likely be tempted to get it. Another thing I need to remind myself to do is whenever I shop at Amazon for my gaming/dvd needs to use the vgchartz store. Since Thanksgiving I made various purchases but only one or two of them did I make via the store because I would always forget. I'm due for another this weekend this time I'll remember for sure :D

“When I was 5 years old, my mom always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down “happy.” They told me I didn’t understand the assignment and I told them they didn’t understand life." - author unknown

I like the background ads.... only see them if I want to (and tbh the sneak preview you get of 3-4mm down the edge entices me to look at the rest)

I do not have a problem with most adds, it is just the ones that make you site there for 10 seconds before you can continue on that get to me, but I can put up with that.
