Wait, you'd actually pick God of War over Shadow of the Colossus?

Oh, boy... That's like choosing Donnie Darko over Children of Men. That's just... wrong.

I'm sure I'll get hated on for this, but I'm not a huge fan of Shadow of the Colossus.

The boss fight parts aren't bad for the most part (though they get old by the end) but I hated the whole finding and getting to the boss parts.

I guess that's the hard part making a game that's only boss fights (though Mike Tyson's Punch Out! did an excellent job of that).

ROFL. You just compared Punch Out! to SotC... Yeah, the "downtime" of SotC was finding the bosses but I never had that big of a problem finding them. I don't think I ever spent more than 15 minutes searching for the next colossi.

What SotC had going for it was atmosphere... Loads of it. It's one of the most intriguing games I've ever played because it all felt so vastly different than anything I had experienced previous to it. Later, it brought in moral questions regarding your actions, interesting gameplay, and a compelling feel to the game brought by its almost near silence. Together, it's one of the few videogames I would classify as quality art. There are loads of messages there, most of which are left to the player to interpret for themselves.

Interactivity at its best, IMO. 99% of the developers out there could learn a lot from that game if we ever want this medium to become a respected avenue for artists to convey their work.

They're both boss fight after boss fight. Punch Out just takes out the nonsense between the boss fights.  :-p

In each one you have a boss (the various boxers in Punch Out and the colossus in SotC) and you have to figure out their weakness or pattern and then exploit it.

I wasn't mocking you for it, T. I was merely pointing out that the comparison, while superficially valid, is entirely hilarious.

NOTHING beats God of War. Not Resistance, not R&C, not SotC, not Jak, not Uncharted.

1) Santa Monica
2) Team ICO
3) Insomniac (just about)
4) Naughty Dog

All are excellent, though.

I agree with Rocket, valid point just I never thought I'd hear Punch out and SotC mentioned in the same breath... though... I've tied games together like this before, so carry on I'm entertained :)

Firstly, Insomniac aren't the second best PS3 team, they're the third. (Santa Monica and Team ICO take the first two spots)

Secondly, don't worry. Resistance 2 improved upon Resistance in every conceivable way. But they made you only carry two weapons at a time, and the controls on the whole became more standard FPS. They chucked individuality out of the window a little, but the core gameplay is great.

The campaign could use some work, the story is still a mess, the graphics are better, online has been boosted to 60 competitive, 8 co-op. There is a co-op campaign that you can play with:

1) Another player on the same system
2) Up to seven other people online
3) Another player on the same system AND up to six other people online.

Same with competitive, but change the 7 to a 59 and the six to a 58.

So yeah, it's worth a purchase.

Fourth.  Naughty Dog > Insomniac.  And, imo, Naughty Dog > Sony Santa Monica.

And while I've only played R&C Future, imo R&C >>>>>>>>> Res 1/2.

The first one is opinion, but Naughty Dog > Santa Monica? No way. Santa Monica made God of War. This makes them developer gods. Naughty Dog's finest work is Uncharted, which is excellent, but not a scratch on GoW. Insomniac's best work is Ratchet and Clank, and I would definitely say Future destroyed R2 if they had put online in! And like I said, R&C3 destroys everything else they have made, and propels them above Naughty Dog. Although Uncharted > Ratchet and Clank, I prefer Resistance to Jak.

I'm guessing you have Team ICO at the top? I have them in second.

OT: Everything you mention, Maxwell, I think "They fixed that in the sequel". I'd say it's definitely worth picking up.

Naughty Dog > Sony Santa Monica indeed, they've made better games then God of War would ever dream to be :)

I still believe I'm going to hold off on Res 2 at least until I pick up Ratchet and Clank Future.

That's probably for the best. I really like Tools of Destruction, but "NO ONLINE" keeps playing inside my mind when I think of it.

Hopefully, they'll put online in the next Future.

They're all excellent developers, that I will agree.

I would classify Soviet Monica's studio more as a "Die Hard" type of studio. Fun to watch, but there's not enough there for me to really respect them. Fun stuff, but not exactly highbrow.

Actually, out of the four you listed, I would put them fourth. If I was allowed to add other Sony developers, they wouldn't even make the top five. It's not a slight on Soviet Monica, it's more of a testament as to how damned good Sony's first/second party development teams really are.

See, it's posts like this that make me think you're a Sony hater.

Lol, I kid, I kid. I know what it's like to hate a hyped, universally loved Sony game, in the form of that awful LittleBigPlanet. The controls are horrendous, the graphics and music are too happy go lucky, the only good thing about the game (from the half hour I could bear to play it for before starting on Resistance 2) was Stephen Fry.

I don't suppose you liked God of War? Why is it so unanimously hated? You just need to lower your thinking and not keep analysing it, it is probably the most fun of any game I have ever played.

Maybe people don't like mindless violence?

Team ICO are top dogs for me. Then Naughty Dog for Uncharted and Jak. Then God of War. Then Ratchet. Then probably Dark Cloud or Sly.

Though Killzone 2 may shake up my order. It could fall between Uncharted/Jak and God of War.

Oh crap. I forgot about Media Molecule. I suppose since they've only made one game, they don't really rank yet. However, LBP is the only game that has come close to challenging the Zelda series as my favorite games of all time, and I'd probably rank it above even the Ico games. Though really they can't be compared, as they are two ENTIRELY different experiences. LBP certainly takes up more of my play time than any of these other franchises, though.

I'd agree with you here - Resistance felt like more of the same. Like Quake 1 with new weapons, or something... I kept thinking, "there's got to be something here that made people give this game such high reviews..." Unfortunately, I didn't find anything. It's no Gears of War, that's for sure.

Also, I'll have to warn you against playing R2. I got caught up in the hype (somehow thought it would be a completely different game, stupid me), but it isn't that different. If you dislike R1 as much as I do, stay away from the second. It shouldn't be a problem, there are many more interesting games on the console worth your time.

Actually, the only Insonniac games I've played are R1 / R2. I know should give R&C a go sometime...

It's funny you mention Quake because after going through their conversion plant, it's blatently obvious the Chimera are Strogg.

And actually, playing this game feels kind of like Quake...

Hope you enjoy it till the end.
