No, it looks like that's my mistake. I know I remember this claim from someone, but it does seem you always claimed to have played some, but only a few.  Right here you seem to have only played a few, ever.

Oddly, in this post, only a couple weeks ago, the number of JRPGs you've played seems to have risen quite quickly.  You seem to have bought every JRPG ever suddenly.  Even been a long time collector.

You've gone from a modest "well I haven't played that many but it's good compared to what I've played" JRPG player to "I've played much more than everyone else and thus my opinion is better" JRPG player.  I can't say I appreciate the change.

Few notes for my defense:

@ Euphoria & DMJ:

I'll admit I didn't own a Playstation 1 when it was relevant (did finally get one in 2000-1). However, my best friend (who got me into JRPGs with DQ1 a long time ago) had a PS1, and I played quite often on his machine. Among others, I've played Final Fantasy VII and VIII, Final Fantasy Tactics, Wild Arms 1-2, ,Xenogears and Vandal Hearts among others. When I got a used PS1, I picked up FFT and VII, as I enjoyed both heavily.

@ Naz - I didn't think that, in that post concerning Eternal Sonata, that they were asking for my entire life history on JRPGs...I only posted the relevant ones, and skipped out on 80% of what I've played. You should note that, when talking about Blue Dragon...I mentioned that it may go in my Top-20 list around #15. Kind of hard to do that if I didn't even mention 20 JRPGs that I played...No?

However, since it seems everyone is grilling me as to what I've played, I'll reproduce the list that I've done before, elsewhere:

NES:

  • Dragon Quest I
  • Dragon Quest III (own)
  • Final Fantasy I (own)
  • Legend of Zelda 2: Link's Adventure (if you consider it a RPG...It did have those mechanics in it).
  • Sweet Home (played via Emu a few years back...Great game)
  • Willow

Genesis:

  • Might & Magic 2 (not a JRPG. But I'll include it given the fact it was one of EA's few solid WRPGs on consoles)
  • King's Bounty (Thank God I bought a copy of this a few years ago...Not a JRPG, but included if for the same reasons as M&M2)
  • Phantasy Star 1 (yes, this was a SMS game, but I'll include it...Played it via Emu a few years back)
  • Phantasy Star 2
  • Phantasy Star 3
  • Phantasy Star 4
  • Shining Force 1 (emu)
  • Shining Force 2 (emu)
  • Shining in the Darkness
  • Sword of Vermillion (emu)
  • Lunar: Silver Star Story (Sega CD. Awesome game).

Gameboy:

  • Final Fantasy Adventure
  • Final Fantasy II
  • Final Fantasy III
  • Pokemon G/B

Super Nintendo:

  • 7th Saga (gotta add to my 'own' list. Darn difficult and never beat it....Kept dying on one of the other PC's that had a rune :-\)
  • Arcana
  • Actraiser 1
  • Actraiser 2 (would either count?)
  • Bahaumut Lagoon (emu. Never launched in NA)
  • Brainlord (emu)
  • Breath of Fire 1
  • Breath of Fire 2
  • Chrono Trigger
  • Dragon View (emu. Never realized a Drakken sequel made it to the SNES)
  • Drakken
  • Earthbound
  • Final Fantasy IV (II in US)
  • Final Fantasy V (emu...Never launched in the US, sadly)
  • Final Fantasy VI
  • Final Fantasy Mystic Quest (I enjoyed it a lot more than what people bashed it of)
  • Gemfire
  • Illusion of Gaia
  • Live a Live (Emu)
  • Lufia 1
  • Lufia 2 (emu. Sadly enough, I couldn't buy it when it came out in the US...Despite owning the predicessor)
  • Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen
  • RoboTrek
  • Secret of Evermore
  • Secret of Mana (I want to take back the Eternal Sonata Co-Op quote you gave me...SoM was better on co-op. I bought one of those darned 4 player controller ports just for SoM)
  • Secret of the Stars (one of the few Tecmo JRPGs I can remember playing)
  • Seiken Densetsu 3/Secret of Mana 2 (Emu...Never came to USA)
  • Shadowrun (Emu)
  • Shin Megami Tensei/Digital Devil Story 1 (Emu)
  • Shin Megami Tensei/Digital Devil Story 2 (Emu)
  • Super Mario RPG (I didn't add this to my collection...Oddly enough...I do own it).
  • Star Ocean (emu. Never launched in NA)
  • Soulblazer
  • Tales of Phantasia (emu. Never launched in NA)
  • Terranigma (emu. Never launched in NA)
  • Wonders from Ys 3 (I think that was it? Very difficult game...Never actually beat it legally..Had to use a game genie)

Nintendo 64:

  • Quest 64 (ugh. Horrible)
  • Ogre Battle 64

Playstation 1:

  • Alundra
  • Final Fantasy VII
  • Final Fantasy VIII
  • Final Fantasy Tactics
  • Vandal Hearts
  • Xenogears
  • Wild Arms 1 & 2

Playstation 2:

  • Dragon Quest VIII
  • Final Fantasy XII
  • Kingdom Hearts 1
  • Kingdom Hearts 2
  • Tales of Legendia

Xbox 360:

  • Blue Dragon
  • Enchanted Arms
  • Eternal Sonata
  • Kingdom Under Fire: Circle of Doom
  • Lost Odyssey
  • Phantasy Star Universe
  • Tales of Vesperia
  • The Last Remnant

Nintendo DS:

  • Dragon Quest IV
  • Final Fantasy III

.. Thats the near-complete list. Unless otherwise noted, the games without (emu) beside them were played on the original hardware. There are a few games such as 7th Saga missing from my 'games owned' list that I do indeed own....And I'm sure I am forgetting a few games that may not be considered, or are Western (such as the Xbox RPGs, and X360 RPGs. I did include some of the older Genny titles I played a lot like the EA ones). Also, there are a few others thats' names evade me that I played that may be considered RPGs, but I can't find definitive answers on which ones they are (some older SNES ones).

I think that part of the reason I've been a JRPG snob as of late is that it's my reaction to the bashing of X360 JRPGs. Maybe I'm in the minority, but I enjoy JRPGs regardless of quality....It's always been my favorite genre, and I've played more RPGs than any other genre (I own quite a few PC RPGs as well that I didn't bother listing, FYI). I feel that most of the JRPG bashing is rather dumb, because you can find incredible joy in titles that aren't always the best reviewed. I don't remember people singing the praises of Chrono Trigger or Super Mario RPG until well after they released, and people revisited them and thought they were incredible. I'd say that I enjoyed 90-95% of the RPGs I've ever played, which may skew my view. Now, that's not to say I don't have a Top-10 or Top-20 list that'd almost entirely exclude modern JRPGs, but that's my opinion...And we're all free to have that, aren't we? :)

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

The only reason I only mentioned "HD" was because XBOX 360 owners were the ones saying "PS3 can't sell JPRGs," and the like. It was a dumb argument to begin with, but at least now it's put to rest. Likely, it'll outsell every 360 JRPG in Japan, which should be enough to keep this argument down.

It's also the reason Stickball is all over this thread, because he was grossly incorrect in agreeing with that sentiment.

On a sidenote to stickball, IDK how you could enjoy any of the 360 JRPGs, save for LO and ToV, but seeing as that you didn't play PS1 JRPGs, your standards must be extremely low. Xenogears is probably one of the best JRPGs around, like Euphoria said, and you owe it to yourself to play some good JRPGs like that. Not mediocre ones like LO and the like. And don't get me started on IU, BD, and TLR.

SNES rpgs >>> PS1 rpgs.

Hard to say...

Xenogears, Vagrant Story, Star Ocean: The Second Story, FF VII-IX, Valkyrie Profile, SaGa Frontier 1-2, Grandia, Lunar 1-2, Legend of Mana, Legend of Dragoon, Persona 2: Eternal Punishment, Chrono Cross Breath of Fire 3-4, Parasite Eve 1-2...

Against: Secret of Mana, Tales of Phantasia, FF IV-VI, Terranigma, Secret of Evermore, Chrono Trigger, Illiusion of Gaia, Star Ocean, Bahamut Lagoon...

Maybe I missed a couple... but my choice goes for the PS1.

As for WKC, nice... I hope it does 350-400k LTD (or more thanks to online, Japan seems to love it). For now my primary concern is actually getting the game.

Let me add Suikoden, Suikoden II, and Wild ARMs to your list...

As an old-school harcore jrpg fan, thse games are not what they used to be.  But what I've read of WKC, it brings back part of that foundation what's been lost in most JRPG's for the past few years.  Hopefully, this will bring out the best in JRPG fans, but it also seems to bring out some of the worst in haters.  Good for WKC and gamers.  Keep it real, and keep it alive.
