Forums - Sony - Sony cant cut the price

Thanks for opening my eyes, now I know FO SHO Sony can't cut the price...

Around the Network

What's good for Sony doesn't neccessarily translate into what's good for the consumer. If Sony can't find ways to lower manufacturing costs to cut the price at all next year and is happy to the keep the status quo with the 360 essentially trouncing it in the weekly sales, then the bad press in the media will continue, developers/publishers may lower their support of the console and consumer confidence in a long life will be down.

I have a better idea: stop making PS3. When that happens Sony dont have to sell at a loss

I think sony should temporarily stop making ps3's for a month or two, sort of like a re launch..

mM

You also have the problem of when they drop the price it may or may not have caught up with cost reductions so the cycle continues.

Even Sega didnt take a decision like that........... Dreamcast2 here we go!!!

Note to self: don't make a console that costs too much to manufacture so that at any given price point it is either too expensive for the consumer or loses me too much money, or in the PS3's case, both.

Got it.

Thanks.

Sony is just going to coast, and wing it, and try to minimize their gargantuan losses until they afford a price cut. That is their only option, and sadly by then the Wii will have about 80% of this gen's marketshare. Sony really shot themselves in the foot and face with this thing.

Price alone won't solve Sony's woes, Leo-J. Lowering the price or not, the PS3 isn't offering what the Wii - or the 360 can ATM. The Wii is a nongamer's delight - you can play and interact with games - and you can't do that on the PS3. You can also enjoy a ton of older GC and Xbox games on both systems. They both represent value. Folks can play most of their older games on the Wii and 360. The PS3 shot itself in the foot by leaving out BC with the newer models.

Yes, a price cut would help but also hurt Sony. It is something they will need to think about long and hard - but no money is a horrible situation regardless.

 LMAO XD

edit: by the way the ps1 library is larger than the xbox and gamecube.

First of all you LMAO'ed at him but didn't give a reason why you thought the bolded part was so funny.

Also people don't want the PS1 (2 gens ago) library anymore, they want the PS2 library (last gen like the xbox and gamecube). Why would you try to compare the PS1 and Xbox/Gamecube, sounds to me like you are straw grasping.

Currently dreaming of: DKC4 or Sonic the Hedgehog 4 (classic 2D platformers) for WiiWare, Smash Bros. for DSi, New Super Mario World for DSi, a Wii remake or true sequel of Final Fantasy Tactics.

One down, hopefully more awesomeness to come.

Yea, selling the PS1 and PS2 for $299 and then selling the PS3 at $599 was a bad mistake. But then it isn't really a video game console, or is that what consumers think?

Well, the main fact is probably $399 is a gr8 value but Sony dropped the bomb going for more power then developing a good video games console. Adding blu-ray, wi-fi, ps3 backwards compatibility, memory card readers, and then taking away the memory card readers and ps2 compatibility... Sony just needs to focus right now on making a good video game console rather then justifying a $399-599 price point. Seems they might be too late.

Above I'm a proud Gran Turismo fan, not a Sony fanboy, and now a proud 360 owner, but sharing xbox live accts ATM

End of 2009 Predictions (made Jan 1, 2009): My predictions were pretty accurate, the 360 was over and the Wii was just under.

Wii: 65 mil (yea I'm crazy) 360: 35 mil (its getting there) PS3: 30 mil (the slim better do well)

End of 2010 Predictions (made Jan 7, 2010):

Wii: 81 mil  360: 47 mil PS3: 45 mil

Yea unless sony starts making money on the ps3 at $399 in Q1 or Q2 09, there will not be a price cut imo.

Hopefully they really do have a 10 year plan..

Apparently, they'll break even in early 2009. Cut out the WLAN (like I've been saying for months), take out some of the parts, make things more efficient, I think they can cut the price enough for them to be profiting from a $350 PS3.
