Hmm, how are any more than 0.1% of the world going to take advantage of 1920p?

It's a future proof Format that will take advantage of your 1080p and in 5 years if you want to upgrade your TV you will be ready.
It has a Resolution up to 1920p... So it will still look damn nice on a 1080p.
Not to mention being able to be read by a red laser is going to change many, many, many things..
Including Video Game Consoles.

PS4 Preordered - 06/11/2013 @09:30am

no matter how nice something is, its not enough to win a format war. blu ray is clearly better than dvd, yet dvd still eats it up for lunch. this new format is going to have to compete with sony, which has a lot more funding, a lot more support, and a lot more connections. movie studios aren't going to pull out of a format that they just started backing this year. i'm sure they have multi-year contracts with sony to support blu ray. so no matter how good this new disc is, it's not going to work. no way in hell.
even if everyone had the TVs to support this it wouldn't take off at this point. People don't care about the difference, the average person doesn't even care about the difference between DVD and blu-ray, why would they care about this.
currently playing: Skyward Sword, Mario Sunshine, Xenoblade Chronicles X

Blu-ray is clearly better than DVD, on HDTVs. DVD still out sell Blu-rays due to cost of Blu-ray movies, players, and HD tvs. If this format's cost are in line with current DVDs and productions costs to upgrade from DVD is minimal, it is hard to see studios passing on this format. It will have better quailty than current Blu-rays and better protection against priacy. Of course, it would help to know the current production costs for Blu-ray as opposed to DVDs.

Wait, so you're telling me that people are going to want this even though they don't believe that 1080p is necessary.

if people aren't buying blu ray now for the 1080p experience, why the hell will they buy the 1920p experience when NO CURRENT GEN TV can display it? there is absolutely no point for this piece of tech. no movie studio is going to spend the localization time and money in order to make their movie 1920p, when they know that no one cares about it, and NO ONE CAN TELL THE DIFFERENCE.
It's all about costs. If you had an option to buy something that is better for less, who would spend more money on something that is worst and cost more? If their claims of the cost of the product being in-line with current DVDs (players and media), why would someone buy blu-ray when the players cost up to 10x as much and movies cost over double? If they can actually do what they claim at the same cost of current DVDs do you really think people would buy Blu-ray over it?
The media can support up to 1920p, but it does not mean that movies studios need to support that. They can still put movies on at 1080p and still call it HD. Costs to upgrade current dvd production to the new format is low, and if all the costs of the new format is still less than what blu-ray cost, I cannot see why a company would remain with blu-ray.
Bluray players are limited to 50GB I believe. In order to read triple layers and more, you'll have to buy another blu ray plyaer
contracts.
and if you think localizing to a new format, pushing it, advertising it, and putting your gun behind it is cheap, then you're not looking at the big picture. even if this thing can really cost the same as a dvd, the costs to introduce the damn thing next to an already ailing blu ray is going to be massive. for movie studios, another format is just an unwelcome premise that will add more confusion to the market. the reality is, people don't give a damn about high definition as much as they give damn about the movie itself.
and what about sony pictures and their supporters eh? you think they'll back this format after the long and bloody format war with hd dvd? no way. certainly sony will do everything in it's marketing power to blacklist this thing. the majority of movie studios, of course, will support the format with better funding and better support.
