Forums - Gaming - This console war was decided years ago. The nextgen war is taking place now.

Sure plenty of older people know of the Play Station brand. Mostly for people who sit in a dark room hunched infront of TV looking like some nerd. They will still know the name.

Though to the OP your right behind the idea. The generation is already determined before release. I'm pretty sure most people already believe that Sony and MS will adopt Wii values. While keeping it's old values.

Personally now that Nintendo has sucessfully integrated the "sensor/light" bar without a hitch. They can now add stuff to it. How about WiiSpeak and a Webcam(like DSi, 360). The Wii already has BT why not allow the Wii to use that BT to access images on the BT cell phone or have a Wii Phone shop channel. Wii does have a weather, news, TV Guide(jpn), TV BBC?(UK awesome, idea)They may also add a mic to the Wiimote.

I don't believe making the Wii2 all that more accessible is going to be the goal of the next system. Making it more life usable will probably what will happen more. It's accessing the distant market that are not video game orientated that is the target. Much like the DSi direction. How can you make a simpler controller? The Wiimote can see some improvement, but otherwise as a controller it's the most adaptable, easy to use and has the most feauters. Without being complex.

I don't think Nintendo will do as well next gen as they did this gen.

Let's look at Sony. They were on top of the world with the PS2. A lead of 100 million units over the Xbox and GameCube. It has sold almost 3x what its competitors have sold combined. It was profitable, and due to sheer userbase, it got both third party support and software sales.

Then came the PS3. Third place, several million units behind its competitors, expensive and sold at a loss. Third party support disappearing.

What's to say Nintendo won't go the same way? What's to say they won't get as complacent as Sony?

And Sony are going to learn from their mistakes. Pushing new technology is a bad idea. Accessibility, low price, good games, these sell consoles.

The reason I would say that it is unlikely for Nintendo to fall in a similar way to how Sony fell is because there were signs of Sony's hubris even before the PS2 launched. On top of this, there were signs that Nintendo was moving in the right direction even before the Gamecube launched. Whether people like to believe it or not, the market did not just turn on a dime in this generation, Nintendo's success is not a fluke, and it will take a long time and a solid effort from another company to unseat Nintendo.

Tell me when in the history of Nintendo have they been complacent? Only one generation and that was gamecube, but even then they made the most powerfull system and maximised game quality with it.

They invented the analogue stick. (PS2 invented the use of 2)

They invented shoulder buttons. (they also invented the shooting trigger button)

They invent new genres like PS360 make repetitive genre staples. (wii everything, pilotwings, endless ocean, etc)

Complacent? what?

They invented 3d standard for action/adventure/platforming games.

They worked with and encouraged some of the best 2nd party games on their systems. (granted the wii is losing that reputation)

Lastly, they invented the perfect games to accompany both their new technology innovations. (WS and wiimote)

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

there is no guarantee Nintendo would dominate next gen market but if history teaches us anything, it is certain that Nintendo will try to make another pure gaming machine, not multimedia center. It is also a given that it would be cheap to manufacturer from day 1.

On a personal note, I believe in the humble Shigeru Miyamoto and his willingness to bring fun to all gamers. As long as he is heading the design for the new Nintendo consoles, I don't think Nintendo would ever be complacent.

MikeB predicts that the PS3 will sell about 140 million units by the end of 2016 and triple the amount of 360s in the long run.

We really won't be able to predict anything for another couple of years. That being said, Nintendo won't make the same mistakes as Sony, and that's a given. They're a different type of company, and wouldn't fall into the same traps. Who knows what Wii2 is going to be, we really aren't going to know for a while.

Okay, let me rephrase that.

Nintendo have always been the innovators. They've made new gaming technology every gen except with the GameCube. Which flopped. Many people say the PS2 is the GameCube of this gen (I personally think it's more like the Xbox).

Sony pushed technology completely unrelated to gaming- The Cell and Blu-ray. Because of those two, we've gotten incredible games, but manufacturing costs were massive and they were selling at a loss at a high price.

Sony won't make that mistake again. I doubt Nintendo will either. But as we've seen, bringing nothing new also results in failure. So Nintendo has the challenge of innovating without raising production costs. If they can do that, they might win next gen. If they can't, they'll go the way of the PS3.

Sega's Saturn had shooting tigger buttons before Gamecube did.

i hope the Wii 2.0 (or whatever they call it) has more shooters and more games that use its inovative controls (i.e Third partys start making decent games for it)
