Forums - Sony - People are never going to see LBP as a success

No matter how good the game does commercially (1.3 million sold in 8 weeks), or Critically (metacritic if 95) the game will never be seen as a success.  It's a shame too, since the game is so freaking awesome.

This community would rather downplay the game's success, and call the game a failure because of the hype (not the game's fault), rather than look at it on it's own merits, a new IP, which sold really well on the PS3 and has that high of a metacritic average.  We'd rather look at this game as not a success, and continue playing Generic Shooter A, Madden 2020, and Traditional turned based JRPG 1,922,498, instead of praising a new IP for doing something different and what some would call innovative.

So I am never going to defend the game again, and neither should you

It's a success commercially, and critically, and that's all that matters.

Eh, i'm not sure it's doing anything different.  I'll have to see after X-mas once i get some time with it.  Is it really true that you can't even create new objects and costume items?

It really does just sound like a game with a create a level function, when it was advertised as a create a game, game.

"LBP will be HUGE" was because of all the possible user created contents I believe.

Ah gotcha. So in the company of "Huge!!" we should add:

N+ is HUGE!!

RPG Maker is HUGE!!

Unreal Tournament III is HUGE!!

Or to make it simpler, Any PC Game with an active modding community is HUGE!!

Oh plus...Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts is HUGE!!

I suppose, yeah. Leo-j posted an article about the options in the "create" mode. Underneath the article he wrote "LBP will be huge". DMJ then wrote it at the bottom of all his posts about LBP and it caught on. I will try a find the link, but it was along time ago.

Apart from one or two crazzy people, the hype was never about how much it was going to sell. It was about how awesome this game looked. Personally I have been very excited about LBP since it was first shown. But I always thought it wouldn't sell brilliantly (not at first anyway). So far the sales have exceeded my expectations, along with just about everyone else (if we ignore the crazzy people).

I see LBP as a success.

Yep it was me who said "LBP will be huge" I started everything!!!!

DmeisterJ

just took the blame!, so Its fine by me, I still think LBP is going to sell amazingly well.

The problem is that the couple of crazy people are the loudest, most attention seeking whores out there. Every thought that crosses their minds requires a large thread written about it, which always seems to stretch into epic amounts of pages. They are the sore thumb.

It makes sense it would be leo-j. As I can see he even says it after your reply to me.

@leo-j

It makes perfect sense now. You do take up 30% of all of the crazy predictions that get re-quoted in future instances back to reasonable Sony fans as their median opinion on matters. I'm surprised your fellow Sony fans don't throw rocks at you when you type at this point.

I will give you credit for one thing though. At least you know what the word "huge" means.

LBP is doing fine, end of story.

I just recently bought it and I think the game is brilliant but suffers from a couple of MAJOR drawbacks. The first, of course, is the levels that come with the game aren't really sewn together well or wrapped around any kind of story. It's just a bunch of really cool stuff thrown together. I finished up most of the worlds that came with it and have ventured out into user-created land and found some cools stuff... Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and other theme-based worlds created by people with a hell of a lot more time than myself.

Had LBP come with a solid "story" backed with a much more significant single player "campaign", (second major issue) it most certainly would be at or near the top of every GOTY list in existence.

Pushing out 2M+ copies of ANY game is impressive. LBP will certainly do this and more. Getting a Metacritic score in the mid 90s is equally impressive. That doesn't change the fact that the game feels unfinished to me and for that will never get the respect that I would give a "complete" experience. Perhaps the add-ons that are in the pipe will give us a solid story-based campaign that the game should have shipped with.

I hope the add-ons are cheap, however, because $59.99 is a lot to pay for a game that requires a multitude of microtransactions to get the most out of it...

I hate trolls.

Systems I currently own:  360, PS3, Wii, DS Lite (2)
Systems I've owned: PS2, PS1, Dreamcast, Saturn, 3DO, Genesis, Gamecube, N64, SNES, NES, GBA, GB, C64, Amiga, Atari 2600 and 5200, Sega Game Gear, Vectrex, Intellivision, Pong.  Yes, Pong.

KylieDog, you just proved, that LBP is UNDERTRACKED atleast in UK. :)

p.s. LBP is selling less then 2 months. =) And probably already passed 2 mln. in sales, just was undertracked. More data - better estimates. LBP FTW! =)
