I agree it is nonsence, the price point of $399.99 will move alot of ps3's maybe making them sell out, the ps3 is harder to make than the wii so I dont think the ps3 can outsell it if the wii doesnt drop in sales at a rate of 100k.

I don't think that SMG coming out in the first part of the Wii's life will have too much negative impact on its sales.  Super Mario Sunshine came out only 11 months after the Gamecube did (5 months for Europeans)* and yet it ended up with 5.91 million copies sold -- the third best seller on the Wii -- for a 27% attach rate.  That last number is better than what Halo got. 

And the NES got a total of 1,321 games.*  That may not be as many as the PS2 got, but it is plenty of competition for a game coming out 5 years into the console's life cycle, thank you very much. 

As for the number of systems, there are certainly not more than "ever before".
--This hardware cycle has the Wii, XB360, and PS3.  THREE.  
--Last hardware cycle had the Dreamcast (albeit short-lived), PS2, GCN, Xbox.  FOUR.
--Before that was N64, PS1, Saturn, and a couple systems with very small market share (CD-i, 3DO).  THREE-PLUS.
--Before that SNES, Genesis (with add-ons), TurboGrafx-16 (small userbase but still).  Neo-Geo first came out in this era for the wealthy and truly hardcore.  ($650 plus $200 per game!)  THREE-PLUS.
--Before that NES, Atari (several consoles), Sega Master System, and many consoles with small market share.  THREE-PLUS.  
--So, in reality, there are actually FEWER consoles now than ever before, or equally as many as usual if you exclude the little guys that got nowhere and/or failed badly.  

But the interesting thing here is that usually two consoles come out on top in a close race, or not-so-close, but there is a third that does so badly people don't remember it next to the bigger "console war".  I bet a lot of people don't even remember that Italy was Nazi Germany's big ally in WWII.  They only remember Germany and Japan.  Bad analogy but you get the point.

 This section of the site is all about sales analysis.  The fact that this type of comparison paints a poor picture for the PS3 should be irrelevent to any objective analysis.  Equally fair and valid comparisons have been made about the Gamecube's performance vs the PS2's performance.

In the end sales comparisons are not about putting everybody in a favorable light, they are about illuminating the situation for what it is, regardless of whether its good, bad, or ugly for a given console....and favorites be damned. I won't say everybody on this site approaches the analysis from this kind of objective standpoint, but there is not a whole lot we can do to stop someone else from posting here.

If you are browsing this section for anything other than sales information and analysis you have the wrong impression. Granted this impression is fueld by the way a lot of people treat "Sales Discussion" as a general forum.

I'm sorry , but I don't see where comparing the sales of a system in one region to the sales of another one worlwide provides any other/better/more indepth information than region vs region or worldwide vs worldwide sales , for the cultural and economical background is far too different (even though ww ofcourse includes that region it's compared with).

I'm totally aware ,that those kinds comparisms were made back in the days aswell (well .. I have a GC and never had a PS2 after all) ,but does that make them any valuable? I for one don't think so.

So in my opinion this is one of the specific types of comparisms ,that are only made for bragging rights ("console A is selling better to a potential audience of ~250 million , then console B is to a potential audience of 6 billion people") , but ofcourse you are invited to show me a valuable purpose of this one ,that can't be achieved by other "fair" comparisms.

Uhm.. I don't know how you read my text , for I am pretty calm (i didn't use caps , didn't use multiple punctuation marks , didn't use colors/different fonts/whatever to make my comment stand out) , but I deeply think this comparism holds no value.

 Honestly, a thread like this just sounds like a huge Wii circle jerk for all the huge Wii fanboys.   I just don't see how this is good for anything other then bragging rights, even if it's just temporary.   The thing is, the Wii's US sales will never stay ahead of PS3 WW numbers for long before games that people want come out and the sales increase quite a bit.  And I don't think the Wii has the lasting power to even overcome the PS2 numbers put up over the years.

This is just a self serving post for Wii fanboys, and you are just pushing your little cause further because of it. What good does it do for the industry if one company temporarily passes sales in just one area compared to worldwide?

 All it tells me is that you want to stroke your e-peen because you just love your little Wii so very very much and probably even cuddle with your wii in bed every night while gently stroking your Wii telling it how much you love it.  Please, stop playing with  your Wii so much, you just may go blind from the lack of HD graphics.
