Forums - Gaming - MS dismisses 'major design flaw' reports

http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=169593

the reaction is funny  "1700 different components and 500 million transistors, there are obviously many things that can malfunction" so there are millions of reasons why the red ring will continue to haunt xbox owners.

As i mentioned in another post i have received a refurbished unit with the new heat sinks. IT was appalling that i had to get it replaced at all, but the new fix works fantastically. The console doesnt even get warm after hours of play

Well at least they've extended the warranty for RROD damages, which is better then nothing I suppose.

It'll be interesting to hear more reports from people who either got new Elites, Premiums, and Cores, and returns with the new heat sinks.

I wonder what they got against a recall, they recalled the xbox if i remember right.

The number of components is probably irrelevant as MS's definition would probably be totally different than a random electrical engineer counting the parts.  The heat thing, is a big deal.  Look at the problems that Intel went through in the 90's with those faulty chips, whose reputation took a long while to "fix"  even after the logic error of said chips was totally fixed.

Look for MS to keep pretending that nothing at all is wrong, until a large % of the 360s that haven't been given another heatsink/65nm upgrade, have been implemented as the new standard.

They recalled the power cable not the actual console.  And it went like this: everyone that had already registered their console was sent a new power cable in the mail without having to do anything.  People who didn't register simply had to go to their website and put their address and xbox serial number in to receive one.  You then got a new slightly different cable in the mail with a note attached saying to throw out the old power cable.

Regardless of the complexity of the hardware, a one billion dollar problem is a 'major design flaw'. Comparatively the problem that Intel had that dallas is referring to was a 500 million dollar mistake. Also, a 'major design flaw', though the Pentium brand survived, and even thrived, because Intel was willing to make quality paramount and did a full recall.

To Each Man, Responsibility

Microsoft blames a rediculously high rate of hardware failure for the 360 on the fact that it has too many parts? How small and inexperienced a company would Microsoft have to be for that to be anywhere near a ligitimate excuse? Put a little more effort, time and money into QA or be prepared to issue a recall that will cost you even more of all three in the end (or lose customers instead).

Prediction: Wii passes 360 in US between July - September 2008. (Wii supply will be the issue to watch, and barring any freak incidents between now and then as well.) - 6/5/08; Wow, came true even earlier. Wii is a monster.
