Forums - Sony - Ps3: the Dreamcast/Sega Saturn of this Generation?

The PS3 is hard to develop on, like the Saturn so I guess it is.

Pixel Art can be fun.

The Dreamcast is the greatest console ever. Nuff said.

My Games of 2011:

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword

Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

Super Mario 3D Land

Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception

no the PS3 has more hype than deamcast ever did

I agree. I am also going into the game biz with a current college program of Game Art and Design and soon Comp Science at George Mason U. I have seen this since 2006. The architecture was not ready to hit the mainstream so soon and made the uncanny valley like the Valles Marineris on Mars. Dev is slow not because of bad capabilities but b/c of proprietary and insufficient XDR RAM, CELL dev kit availability and lack thereof, among other things. It is like the Saturn in design, except that the consolidation is in the CELL.

The PS3 can´t be "the PS2"...we´re going into the full 3rd year in this generation, and the PS3 is still in last place...in the same time frame, the PS2 had already left the Dreamcast and all the competition in the dust and never loked back, while the 360 is more than 6 million ahead.

Really, none of the current gen home systems looks like "a new PS2" in my eyes.

The 360 has a lot of games, a tendency to sell a huge number of titles, but lacks the hardware sales numbers the PS2 enjoyed.

The PS3 has even less games than the 360, and doesn´t have the HW sales its predecessor enjoyed.

The Wii boasts even better HW sales numbers than the PS2 in the same time frame, but lacks that huge amount of 'AAA traditional core' 3rd party titles the PS2 enjoyed.

So, the way I see it, none of these systems is the new PS2....I guess the only system that could come close to being a new PS2, right now, is the DS.

PS3: 17 million and going
DC: 10 million and died.

question? Do you Sega fans love the dreamcast because of SEGA or because of the games...or is there another reason? I was gonna get one way back when because of Code Veronica but then SH2 was announced and made Code Veronica look so dated that I forgot the system existed.

More like the Saturn. Parallel processing and hard to program for. Not as much third party support as competition. Made to be something it wasn't supposed to be. The Saturn was made for being a 2D powerhouse, but they disregarded most of that and tried to do 3D on it. PS3 was made to benifit from and for Blu-ray. It should have been made to benefit from Blu-ray for a better gaming experience. Lack of advanced Blu-ray tech, made for some games to have mandatory installs to compensate for the drives slow reading speeds. Which counteracts the purpose of a hich capacity media, if your going to install it to hard drive anyways.

The Dreamcast was easy to program for, but easily pirated. Opposite of PS3.

PS> Dreamcast is the best console ever.

Exactly.  Until PSthree comes out with a faster BR drive and better line ups are announced with addition to more 3rd party support, I don't see PS3 as a major success this time around.  Even if they lower the price they are essentially giving up until next gen like Saturn to Dreamcast as they are bleeding money.  Sony has already stated that they will continue to use the Cell so that will reduce the learning curve in the long term.

The worst case scenario would be if Sony continues to have a third place sales and a lack of majority consumer confidence it could lead them to pull out of the console race...

This is a violation of code 12345335433.

"The PS2 is and will forever remain the best console!"

I don't get it. why are you all mumbling about lack of third party support when the ps3 consistently gets its third party games on simultaneous releases, unless microsoft pays for timed exclusivity? i simply don't get it.
