Forums - Gaming - EGM September Issue Review Scores- Lair and Blue Dragon Disappoint

Interesting, I'll wait till I can rent it and/or till the demo comes out. I want to see the entire reviews and see how the game as a whole did and not gripes about one or two things, which it's the controls in this case. If the other aspects of the game are good, like the story, acting, and all that other stuff, then I think spending some time to get used to the controls shouldn't be that bad. Unless the controls are totally impossible to get used to of course.

*edit* to back up what I said about the reviewers, I found the neogaf thread and have quoted the original post about what the reviewers said.

"crispin says the combat system is confusing, and the sixaxis controls don't always work the way they should. lock-on system is also jacked. greg ford says the camera is frustrating in ground combat. the wide open levels hold a lot of potential but ultimately don't deliver garnett says it's a "frustrating disappointment" with a few bright spots"

We'll see I guess?

NCAA Football getting best score makes me throw out pretty much all these reviews from the start. Hasn't it been mentioned that EGM will often base their scores on who they're getting money from?

Though I'm not sure what people were expecting with Blue Dragon. From what I've heard, it plays more as a movie than a game. It seemed destined to fail in the US (though enough mindless DBZ fans might get it). If any other person had made it, I don't think sales would have been what they were in Japan.

Also, I would think flying around on a dragon and engaging in combat close quarter and long distance with dragons and grounds troops is a pretty new game mechanic unless I'm mistaken Happy Squirel.

First off I said "Lair was hyped based entirely on how it looked, not because of how it played or because it had an interesting gameplay mechanic." of all of the comments I have read about it being a system seller and killer franchise NONE ever mentioned the gameplay ...

Beyond that, the use of "Dragons" is pretty new but most of the gameplay I have heard about in this game sounded very similar to Starwars Rogue Squadren 3; in fact one preview said that if you replaced "Dragon" with "X-Wing" they could title this game Starwars Rogue Squadren 4.

EGM Graphics Lair 6

Mario Strikers 7.5 graphics :s. This is really strange you know :s.

Just curious, what's up with the sky in that picture?  I haven't payed a lot of attention to this game so I don't know if it's just something about that world, but it looks like some kind of ice or water.  Are those supposed to be clouds?

I don't know what it is but it looks like someone went a little crazy with an emboss filter.

Personally, in regard to graphics, I would say PS3 and Wii games are scaled differently. And you have to consider art style along with the actual graphics. If this wasn't the case, all PSP & DS games would have to be given 3s because you cannot achieve the same graphics on those systems that you can on the PS3 or 360. Plus, you can't really get the feel of how an entire game looks from one still. I've seen a bunch of LAIR stills that show very lackluster backgrounds and once again, it seems like another PS3 game with far too many muddied colors. It's my #1 issue with these games. Why does it seem developers think realistic graphics have to have ugly color schemes? As an artist, I'm very attuned to color and when all these games seem to favour hues of brown, I don't find them very appealing.

You have an EGM magazine/scans to back that up?

If you can prove it then it is fake, but you have no proof..

Egm's issues with lair Crap controls Awful camera- especially on ground Confusing mission objectives Large levels fell epic, but aren't taken advanatage of Clipping and slowdown Lack of variety Overall, a few bright points but very disappointing BTW; ign's reviews are a joke and Famitsus are rigged. Oh, and please by P3 since its actually advancing RPG's

hmmm. control issues? well according to IGN

"As we've reported previously, the SIXAXIS copes easily with dogfights in open areas, but negotiating the confined chasms without being spotted is a much tougher test of the controller's precision. Thankfully it feels responsive without being twitchy and with a little practice - we're talking less than a few minutes - gliding past the spotlights becomes second nature. "
and:
"Like the power generator attack in the night mission, it's a neat application of the SIXAXIS controls and adds a visceral edge to the gameplay, plus it helps to bring the players closer to the action. Indeed, Sony is so adamant that Lair is an "advert" for the SIXAXIS controller - the words of SCEE producer Dan Maher - that there's no option to fly the dragon using the analogue sticks. "We've done a lot of focus testing to get the SIXAXIS controls just right", explains Maher. "Initially we were aiming to perfect one type of controls, but quickly realised people play in different ways and therefore introduced sliding sensitivity." As a result, Lair is surprisingly easy to pick up and play, and piloting your dragon in the heat of a battle - with swarms of enemies bombarding you from every angle - becomes simple with practice. They're responsive too, and moves such as the quick 180-degree turn, executed by jolting the pad up, means that dogfighting soon becomes second nature."

Maybe EGM just sucked at it?.
