please STOP with the bundled crap

Resistance was HARDLY bundled

Motorstorm was BUNDLED but sold 2.5 MILLION EASILY without bundles....unless you are telling me Motorstorm has MORE THAN 1 Million bundles...

While it's true that Resistance was barely bundled at all (only in one or two countries for a brief time in Europe), Motorstorm was actually bundled VERY extensively and I'd bet that over a million of the sales for it were for the bundle. For a good time, the only way to get a PS3 in the US was through the 80gb Motorstorm bundle, until the 40gb launched.

Yes and no. Where I live in East Europe Resistance was heavily bundled when PS3 arrive. Then comes Motorstorm and was heavily bundled too. After some time bundles with both games appear and it is still available. Even after Uncharted and Ratchet&Clank bundles comes up Motorstorm ones were available and in some stores you get Uncharted or Ratchet&Clank with Motorstorm as bonus. So ... yes  - Motorstorm was bundled more then Resistance ... and no - Resistance was not barely bundled, just not as much as Motorstorm.

It seems that Sony loves bundles. The biggest store here offers at the moment:

SONY PS3 60GB + 2 DSHOCK + RESISTANCE FALL OF MAN + MOTOR STORM
SONY PS3 40GB + UNCHART + RATCHET&CLANK
SONY PS3 40GB + UNCHARTED + NFS
SONY PS3 40GB + FIFA + RATCHET&CLANK (FIFA 08 unfortunately)
SONY PS3 40GB + GT5 PROLOGUE
SONY PS3 40GB + GTA IV
SONY PS3 + FIFA 09 (Not clear is it 40GB or 80GB)

It is pointless to buy PS3 without game/games. You get one or two games for 1/3 of their price in gamestores.

Yeah but you cannot compare GoW2 with R2 in terms of sales. they're not playing in the same league. Only a few games can compete with it, I'm thinking about final fantasy, gran turismo and GTA. But talking about the price again, it really is a barrier. When friends come home playing ps3, I ask them if they plan to get one soon and the answer is the same: "I want one, but 400€ is way to expensive, I'm waiting for a 100-150€ price drop".

A similar price drop will have more effect than all the resistance, killzone little big planet or whatever.

You're right, talking about hardware, Sony price dropping hardware would increase userbase and hardware sales.

....however, comparing software between the PS3 and 360 is nearly a fair comparison.

These games were supposed to be their big holiday games, for each console. Each game hyped to hell, each game part 2 of a successful franchise.

I don't understand why you wouldn't compare these games, saleswise. They are, for all intents and purposes, the direct competitors for largest exclusive, hyped, console games this holiday season, 360 vs PS3. I can't really see an advantage Gears 2 had, besides review scores and userbase, both of which aren't huge differences, or at least aren't huge enough to account for the sales gap.

Why did Gears 2 dominate?

Of course you can compare them, but I think you're ignorning demographics a little.  360 has roughly 1 third larger install base than PS3, however I believe 360 owners vs PS3 owners buy/play shooters to a far higher degree (i.e. the attach rate of a shooter on 360 I believe is much higher than the attach rate for a shooter on PS3).  Therefore I would expect a shooter to sell far less on PS3 (even a premier one) vs 360 due to install base plus a smaller percentage of that install base having any desire to buy the game at all.

So around 10% of 360 install base bought Gears Week one while around 3.5% of PS3 install base bought RFOM2.  I was expecting around 5% of PS3 install base to buy so its a little low for me but I wasn't expecting RFOM2 to see the same attach rate despite being a similar game due to owner demographics.

So, what game genre does the PS3 demographic go crazy for, if not shooters?

I can't think of one game that I believe would flourish on the PS3 in America, that I believe would sell worse on the Xbox 360. :P

Based on what I can tell Third Person Action games such as GTA IV, MGS4. They support those titles much more. Based on shooters you can basically give that mainly to the American fanbase, propping up Resistance 1 slightly and ROFM 2 should surpass it. I predict that GT5 will have strong sales world wide, but it wont be as great as past gens passing 10 M. Those numbers are exclusively reserved for the Wii. If any next gen console pulls at least one game past 1 M it will be a miracle. I'm keeping my eyes peeled for Halo 3 doing it by the end of the this year.

:P yourself!

If you're that interested take a group of titles, work out attach rate during first 3 months vs install base and see if any genres score better on PS3/360 and you've got your answer.  I'm not that interested myself.

My point remains the evidence is that with a smaller US install base (by around a third of 360 base), and shooters tending to sell less well on PS3 vs 360, there is no way a PS3 exclusive shooter is going to sell more in US than a 360 exclusive - unless its so out and out amazing a large proportion of 360 owners can't bare to miss it an invest in PS3s just for that title, or PS3 reaches a tipping point where it has enough strong exclusive shooters to tempt 360 owners.

In my view RFOM2 is not that compelling (nor will KZ2 be IMHO but no doubt some will argue it will be) and so long as 360 has such strong shooters its hard to imagine the core shooter crowd would feel they must have a PS3 to complete their lives with RFOM/RFOM2 and KZ2.

And that's why Gears 2 dominated plain and simple.  Anyone who thought it would be otherwise (i.e. RFOM2 coming close to Gears 2 in US, or even selling more) is drinking some strange kool aid and ain't paying attention to the facts.  However, the evidence does suggest that over time RFOM2 will sell well LTD as due to less shooters on PS3 the core titles sell well over time where on 360 there is so much choice titles tend to be more front loaded.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

I'm just confused as to why people even had high sales expectations for this game? It's a friggin FPS on the PS3...doesn't matter if it's an exclusive...it was never going to hit 500k+ in first few days, it will sell 1 million before chrsitmas though. And that is great for a game like this.

I joke.

Anyway it isn't a flop, that's for sure. I thought the game would sell 500k in NA though. It had a couple days start on Gears and didn't get half the sales of it in NA which I was expecting it would.

Can you stop fucking bringing my name up plz?

kthxby.

OT:

If the first one sold 1.27 million lifetime in 2 years, reaching 300k in one week seems pretty good.

Are you more mad because

  1. He brought up your name?
  2. He mispelled your name?
  3. He was right in his prediction of what you would do?

1. Yes

2. Yes

3. Wot?

wot?= I got pwnd

Wot?

with so many ps3 fans waiting this game with more than 4 mil NA PS3 ser base
this is low, or maybe they waiting more on mirror edge, and COD.

How many people were waiting on Mirror's Edge? It's a not particularly hyped, pretty mediocre, unheard of, EA first person platformer.

I do agree with COD5 though. It has revealed itself to be a major contender and, while not as good as COD4, it appears to be quite a good game. But I'm not getting it. I just hate WWII too much after Medal of Honor... COD5 has an IGN 9.2 by the way, Mirror's Edge has an IGN 7.4. Resistance 2 has a 9.5

And not just 4 million. There are 6.33 million PS3s sitting in people's homes in America. So SIX MILLION people don't want to get what is arguably the best FPS on their console within four days of its release? Even if we scratch out a probably extremely high 2 million who are using it as a Blu-ray player, that's over 4 million people left. 300,000 of these people want Resistance 2?

Meanwhile, the 360 has 13 million in America, Gears 2 has the same Gamespot, EuroGamer and IGN scores as R2, and yet a good 1.5 million people buy the game. 2x the PS3's install base, 5x Resistance 2's sales. But, fair enough, R2 is not as hyped and PS3 owners aren't as shooter-loving as Gears 2 and 360 owners.

Even 500k, 600k would have been good sales. I find 300k pretty disappointing. People say 'you shouldn't compare it to Gears 2' but they're both alien-killing shooters, you are saving the Earth from alien invasion, both began this gen from already-famous developers, both are second in the series, both are releasing at the same time. Both are pretty dark and gory. So, why not? There isn't really anything closer to Resistance 2 on the 360 than Gears of War.

Again, I wasn't expecting Gears of War sales, but 300k is still pretty damned low. Do people hate Insomniac or something? Look at Ratchet and Clank's sales. 300k, for a title this hyped, for a game of this quality, is low even ignoring Gears of War.

(Former) Lead Moderator and (Eternal) VGC Detective

Of course, simply going up against gears probably hurt their sales as well.  There's quite a few people out there that have both systems but a limited budget.  I can't imagine a whole heck of a lot of people were looking forward to R2 more than gears 2.  Especially after the launch.  A pretty high percentage of us are irritated with R2's problems.  But anyways, my friends and I probably would have all bought R2 if it came out in March of next year.  Instead i'm the only one that bought it, and immediately listed it on amazon when I found out just how good gears was compared to R2.

better than the firts week of R1 how did 40k

Its all CoD4's fault, i still have on average 5 people a day play that on my friends list. And anybody who has R2 should not be surprised by the weeks first numbers, we can clearly see how many people are online and its not a very high amount.

...I'm not sure if you're being sarcastic or not, this being the internet.  Just in case you're not... that same logic would translate even moreso to the 360 with cod4, halo 3 and gears 1 all having high numbers before gears 2 came out.  Wonder how gears 1 numbers are now...

I dunno, even though it's not before christmas, i'll bet killzone 2 will sell over 500k.  Reason being, from what i've heard/seen from people who have hands on time, it's a way better game than R2.  It won't have a direct competitor and it will be releasing in a slow month.
