Forums - Sales - Why have most of the games bombed shamefully in Japan this gen?

According to this site, since the launch of the X360 up until today, 364 games have been launched for the current gen consoles.

141 on the Wii, 120 on the X360 and 103 on the PS3.

Out of these 364 games, only 61 broke the 100k mark (16.7%): 36 on the Wii, 19 on the PS3 and 6 on the X360.

25.5% of games broke the 100k mark on the Wii, 18.5% on the PS3 and 5% on the X360.

Of course userbases influence these numbers, but still, the amount of decent hits games on home consoles this gen is surprisingly low. Maybe console gaming in Japan is in a downfall, and home consoles maybe in danger for next gen. Who believes portable gaming will end up killing console gaming?
I still find it weird to see so many games bomb every week, like they end up selling less than 50k even on the Wii, where if 1% of the people buy the game, it will have 70k sales.

1% is 1 out of 100 people. The game that gets this percentage has to have some wide appeal.

I don't know why these games sell so poorly in Japan. I honestly do not know. Maybe be if all these released games had the title "Gundam" on them, they would sell better.

Leatherhat on July 6th, 2012 3pm. Vita sales:"3 mil for COD 2 mil for AC. Maybe more. "  thehusbo on July 6th, 2012 5pm. Vita sales:"5 mil for COD 2.2 mil for AC."

Well i just see no explenation where in Japan Wii games like Tenchu 4 and Sky Crawlers bomb so badly, i know Japanese are waiting for Animal Crossing but apart from Tales and FF IV the rest of the new software sells "meh".

Well its because all the RPG's are on a console nobody likes in JAPAN, im so sure if the RPG'S were on the ps3 or wii we would see more games breaking 200k in japan..

Here we go again...

OT: It's the home console in Japan downfall to blame. See how handhelds are booming. Both are, even.

Most of these games are sequels from ps2. Nothing really surprising, those games are not giving some novelty to their predecessor except better graphics.

Go buy Metroid OTHER M!

Wii code: 6775-1034-2238-1634

PSN: birdie93      XBL: luthor93

You can add me, I won't stop you!

The one game that bothered me alot was tenchu 4... it would've sold 200k easy on the PS2

But yeah it has been a major issue. One thing to say in min is the lack of square enix support to PS3 and Wii. Also a combination of not expecting the success of Wii, and the PS3 not dominating. Next year though, it should change

you can't just include every game, because many western games get released like madden, NBA live etc and there are even some games that they release without a japanese translation. I'm sure you can make your point anyway but it's an exaggeration when you use numbers like this.

currently playing: Skyward Sword, Mario Sunshine, Xenoblade Chronicles X

I believe part of the blame could be thrown at the devs, who aren't willing to put many of their top games on home consoles again. This is mainly because portable game development costs are far lower than home consoles costs, so why even bother making a home console game, if the portable could sell the same or even better considering the userbases.

IMO Wii is suffering from everything here. 1st most devs got caught off guard with the Wii's success, as they were already developing their big guns for the PS3 mainly. Seeing that PS3 didnt turn up what they expected to be, they had to jump on the multiplatform wagon and start porting games to the 360. IMO until most of the HD projects are finished, devs won't start developing for the Wii, save for a few that have already started or another few that hate the Wii. Also the Wii launched when portable gaming was on its better moment in history, with DS selling faster than any console before and all devs already shifting resources towards it.

So here's the thing: Wii games have been of very poor quality or simply new IP's, niche games, second tier developed games or simply spin-offs or shovelware. On the other hand, most HD games have been either sequels to top selling franchises, brand new high budget titles or Western games.

The sales reflect this. First, Wii games are selling pretty badly, since they aren't what most gamers want and considering that there are a lot of casuals, making brand new core games for the Wii like NMH, Z&W, Elebits, might not be a good idea. Secondly, the best selling HD games are all sequels to previous big hits or big new JRPG's. The rest of the Western and smaller franchises for the HDs bomb always.

My conclusion: Until devs start putting their big guns on the Wii or simply putting more normal games on the Wii and keep on putting the best on the HD's, home console sales will keep on being horrendous. And mainly because of the userbase sizes. It's illogical to release a game with a huge selling potential on a userbase of 3 million, vs a userbase of 7 million.

If devs keep on beng stubborn about this, then big losses and maybe no next gen home consoles will happen as a result.

It will be very tough, the main reason is called portable gaming.
