Forums - Nintendo - Will the Wii ever match the 64 in terms of awesome platformers?

johann, i think platformers need to rise again cuz they were great, but they either need to do it in 2D which would mean probably as downloadable titles or the approach to 3D platformers needs to be changed. In 2D its intense because its just side scrolling so there are lots of jumps and enemies all around. But 3D spreads the gameplay out so much with the extra dimension that the jumping and enemies are diluted way down. In 3D its been for the most part much more running around with much less jumping and fewer enemies which leads to more boring platformers which i think killed the genre.

3D mario games have mixed the more open world less "platformy" gameplay with traditional platformer gameplay. but still i think it'd take some new platformer ip's that bring back that intensity from the 2D days to spread the genre beyond mainly just mario. i'd also love to see a full fledged return to 2D for mario with huge massive levels and all the new moves and gameplay devices that have come to mario in 3D but brought to 2D. like a super mario bros. 3/super mario world on steroids with ssbb graphics and maybe bonus 3d stages like mario sunshine had bonus non-waterpack levels.

but i don't think its too likely, seeing as how the most recent platformer (banjo) went in the opposite direction and took away platforming elements from the series in order to make a customizable-vehicle game.

Well it's close

Super Mario Galaxy

Super Mario Galaxy 2

New Super Marios Bros Wii

Donkey Kong Country Returns

Kirby's Epic Yarn

Super Paper Mario

The Wii is without contest the undisputed king of platformers this generation with Nintendo alone keeping the genre alive and giving us great games after great games.

I was just about to comment something like "are you kidding?" or something but the thread looks like it was made before we even knew about NSMBWii, SMG2, Kirby's Epic Yarn, DKCR, Epic Mickey ..etc

There's no doubt now that Wii >> N64! YAY! :D

@Lucase-Rio: What made you post here all of a sudden? The thread's been dead for over 2 years lol

You do realise the topic was 2 years old right?

Anyway, I think if it was a question back then it's been answered by now.

Edit: It was @Lucase-Rio

Can we serve crow to most of the people in this topic? Wii Platformers > All Other Platformers pretty much, :D.

I love how some comments before NSMBWii was announced say that platformers aren't that popular anymore, and then comes the game that totally smashes that perception ^^

Wii really has brought back one of my favourite genres to to relevance :D

I LOVE ICELAND!

If only Sega had made "Sonic the Hedgehog Returns" rather than Sonic 4, :P. Sonic could have been brought back from the dead!

Rare was the King of Platformers, DKC and Banjo Kazooie are my favourites by them..... Jet Force Gemini was the most underrated of them. Either way... The fact remains that Wii has most of the top platformers from NES, SNES, and N64 available on the console right now.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

All of the games the OP pointed out are 3D platformers (if we consider Zelda's to be partially that, which I can't), but none are 2D. I just can remember Yoshi's Island and Mischief Makers to be 2D, and though there may have been a few more, that subgenre was not N64's strength.

Wii has lots of excellent 2D and 3D platformers and I think it has already beaten the N64 in that regard.

What Wii has still to be proven is in original and imaginative games as Wave Race 64, Pilot Wings 64, Blast Corps and so on.

Well it kinda has a mini-wave race... and considering there is no other game like Blast Corps the Wii can hardly be faulted.

However if you are talking "original and imaginative" games in general I would say the Wii has them in spades, way more than the N64.
First and foremost for me, a pair of gems for the generation with Endless Ocean 1 and 2.
I would say Red Steel 2 and Metroid: Other M each have a unique gameplay concept.
Or Deadly Creatures for example on the unique and original story.... similarly for No More Heroes.
It also made point & click adventure more popular.
And WiiWare is full of original and imaginitive titles.

I will agree nothing quite as unusual as Blast Corps, but like I said, there isn't much to compare BC to on any other console.... Endless Ocean has become my Pilotwings this gen, while Wave Race wasn't hugely imaginitive anyway, just a really nice setting for a racing game.

I would sure love new versions of all those 3 games though... as well as an F-Zero.
