Forums - General - Who here will miss Bush?

Yes I will.

All the media did was attack him and his policies (read: No Child Left Behind proposed by Ted Kennedy (D), he did it to shut the guy up and the media still attacked him anyways)

About hurricane Katrina, people attacked him saying he didn't help. Guess what? We have state governments for a reason. Just because a natural disaster happens doesn't mean that the federal government has to come running to help.

Obama only won the election because he wasn't running against McCain, he was running against Bush's "failed policies".

And lastly, the bit on the economy, the government does not control businesses, so they are free to do whatever they when it comes to shipping jobs overseas.

I.. uhm.. won't miss Bush at all.

The only thing I can think of that he did that was good is the national do-not call list, which stops telemarketers but most of us use cell phones anyway so it doesn't matter.

The states Katrina impacted were nearly bankrupt though.

Frankly, whenever a category four or a category five hurricane threatens a large city you should be terrified. There is a strong precedent of Presidents flying/drivng/riding down immediately to help with coordination. Nixon, LBJ, Clinton, and Bush Senior all personally went to handle relief for Camile (190 MPH winds) in 1969, Betsy (125 MPH Winds) 1965, Andrew (175 MPH Winds) in 1992, and Clinton famously cancelled a meeting with Chinese leadership for Hurricane Floyd in 1999. Even Bush Jr went to handle the four hurricanes in 2004 - Charlie & Ivan especially.

Overall, I think Bush will be remembered as an exceptionally unlucky president, who was also more incompetent than usual. So if he would have been 4/10 normally, the events he faced knock his administration down to 2/10 or 3/10. Clinton I would say was exceptionally lucky, but also an average president, so he would have been maybe 5/10, and since he was lucky, I could go as high as 6/10.

Not surprisingly, those figures are about where the approval ratings for the Bush Jr/Clinton years ended up. I don't really think Bush was terrible in the second term either, below average sure, but its the first term thats distressing. So its like F/C in my mind. Clinton I'd go C+/B-.

Disclosure: I consider the last presidents in the B or higher range to be Eisenhower (Republican) and Truman (Democrat). Reagan and JFK, the icons of each party, I find highly over-rated.

Yeah JFK, like anyone who is assassinated, gets look at with rose colored glasses. Reagan was terrible. Our national debt ballooned under him. 500% increase if I'm not mistaken. People need to stop voting for guys they'd have a beer with and need to start voting for guys that could do the job. I mean you wouldn't go to a C- doctor because has a nice guy, you'd go the the A+ doctor that is a complete jackass because you want to live.

4) And lastly, the bit on the economy, the government does not control businesses, so they are free to do whatever they when it comes to shipping jobs overseas.

Here we go:

1) No Child Left behind was the reason why I was not given a full accelerated education. It singlehandedly destroyed the Gifted/Talented program in my school district and forced me to take classes with people with half my motivation and drive to learn.

2) "You're doing a heckuva job, Brownie" I think that's all that needs to be said.

3) Don't forget Palin :) He lost at least one vote because of that. McCain's campaign was full of gimmicks, like Palin, and all of his ads were attack ads on Obama rather than the issues. Yes Obama had attack ads too, but at least he made an attempt to let the people know what his policies were gonna be.

"We're not here to talk about an old washed up terrorist" During that third debate I think it was really summed up McCain's campaign. If he was serious, he wouldn't have even brought it up.

4) Ok? I don't think anyone was arguing that Bush was the reason the jobs were shipped overseas. I could be wrong, but didn't Bush actually push for tax incentives to businesses that kept jobs here? That was cool of him.

That's a lie. McCain made his policies clear. He'd been making them clear for months. Obama was actually less clear in his positions, unless directly asked.

I'm a democrat, but I paid attention to what they were saying. Obama gave more rhetoric than anyone else. It was just that people chose to pay more attention to that than anything of substance.

This isn't anything on whether he'll be any good (that remains to be seen), just that still doesn't excuse people pretending Obama told you more when he didn't.

Hell naw.  I'm all about having a beer with my retarded doctor while he performs surgery on me.

This metaphor is perfect, since we got the president who wants to use a scalpel, opposed to the one who said he wanted to use a scalpel, an axe, and a jackhammer.

We got one who said he wanted to. The last guy said a lot of things that he didn't mean. Talk is cheap. Whatever this guy does, don't think it's guaranteed he will keep his word, if it is, count your blessing after he gets the job done. We should let him know that we aren't just blindly trusting him. Keep him on his toes. bush could have used some of that. A fucking lot of that.

From the beginning though, Bush and Cheney both said they didn't care what the public wanted on any particular issue, because they were basically kings or G-ds of the truth. It's not like they flip-flopped. They treated the people like idiots, and the idiots voted for them AGAIN, proving that they were idiots. Obama is saying he'll listen to and talk to the American people from Day 1. If he flip-flops on that, there will be riots. I'll be there too.
