Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo president hates price drops for consumers’ sakes

Just spotted this on VG247 and I am infuriated by it.

http://www.videogaming247.com/

Heres the piece from VG247 here.

As recent events have seemingly implied, there’s no better way to snag a gaggle of buyers than to slash a few digits off your console’s price tag. However, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata doesn’t need to cheapen his company’s console in order to spur sales, and frankly, he abhors the very thought of it.

“This is my personal thinking, but when the model’s price-tag drops over time, manufacturers are telling consumers it’s better to wait, and I’ve always thought that was a mistake,” he told Touch-DS.jp (translated by Kotaku).

Iwata went on to explain that he believes straight-out-the-gate buyers shouldn’t be forced to feel ripped-off by lower prices later in a console’s life cycle.

Releasing dual-camera-ed, dual-screened sleek ‘n’ sexy console reiterations, though? Well, that’s completely different.

I mean this guy has some cheek.

Maybe if he put some of that money he is saving into getting some games for the wii I could take this guy seriously.

I mean what a cheeky ba****d.

He is basically saying they are lapping up my product so why bother doing anything. I hope his short term strategy comes back to kick him in the balls.

No matter what you say about Sony or MS at least the customer is getting games.

Heaven help us if Nintendo win this gen.

You know  I have the wii it’s my daughters.
Couple of months ago I decided to check out online for want of a better word.

OK I said to myself demos I must check out guess what none.

I mean it is just mind boggling how far behind this is compared to ps360.

Thats why comments like this from this guy pisses me off.

Sorry for the rant folks I just get mad when success breeds contempt.

Anyway I am sure everybody will not share my view.

Because he is a believer of the "values" of a product.

BTW I'm waiting for Sky Render to read about "values vs costs"

I completely agree with him on this one. I almost cry everytime I remember that I've payed $300 for 2gb ram that went down to $75 9 months later. I think about it everytime I'm buying something new.

That's RIGHT people. Sony is being the good guy for not dropping the price.

While Microsoft. Bad bad man... how dare you save me 100 bucks and sell me your Arcade for 199.

*shaking fists*

As has been said many, many times before, Nintendo has produced sequels to their biggest franchises faster than ever before.  Nintendo is doing great in the games department.  Third parties are the ones who need to catch up.  It looks to me like that will be happening very soon.

At the rate that the Wii is selling right now, it would be just plain dumb for Nintendo to drop the price on the Wii.  It's called supply and demand.  Demand is still very high at this price point, so it should stay at this price point.

Have you noticed the bad rep MS is getting even on this forum about xbox dropping in price so many times (even if it isn't many times, it just looks that way). It has become a joke, *add anything sony or nintendo does* well MS will just counter that with a pricedrop!

The outrage from people who brought iphones first and later a new iphone comes along with a lower price tag still. Dropping prices can be pulled off well but you need great timing. Nintendo priced their product so well they don't need a price drop, I love sony but I'll be waiting for a price drop because they don't have a good price still.

You want then to put money on games, Hello?? what rock have you been lying under?

sigh... personaly? I have had more then enough games from Nintendo this year.

If it isn't turnbased it isn't worth playing   (mostly)

Please don't defend cockiness because that's all this statement is imo.

We all know how well the wii is doing but that isn't the point.

Gamers deserve better than this and with his attitude it would seem sales are all that matter and f**k everything else.

Are you defending that position.

I cry every time I see $99 Gamecubes.

As with translated interviews I think people should always be careful about reading too much into what they say ...

With that said, I think the Gamecube being a more powerful system at a lower price than the PS2 made Iwata question whether price was ever a major motivating factor in someone buying a system; as long as the price of a console is in a reasonable range to most people a price drop has a limited (sales) benefit, and when you reduce the price of a product you are creating the expectation of further price reductions.
