Forums - Nintendo - The Conduit's development, and High Voltage as the developer.

(To view the full pic right click the pic, and click view image)

As we know The Conduit, was announced in April of this year. When announced there were a few screens released as well.

April 17

After these pics were released there were some complaints of how the character models looked, and the environments.

Now lets look at some screens 3 months later.

July 9th

Notice how the character models have much much more detail and the lighting in the energy weapons is far more impressive. The environments start to become more detailed as well. So already high voltage seems to be listening to the input that their fans make, and fixing what needs to be fixed.(the fans determine what needs to be fixed). Not only that but that add new things that weren't mentioned such as the lighting. You also see the art direction look much better which was also another gripe from fans. Oh and by fans I mean of the Wii in general.

Ok those things were fixed, but fans still had problems with the textures in the environments. This won't take three months to do though, and it still has yet to be done, but you do notice that if you look at some of the more recent screens that the textures are starting to look better.

Oct 29th

Notice how the brick wall and road are much more "bumpy", and there are designs on some walls like graffiti and  signposts. In the second pic how the "vine" looks pretty detailed, and fits the same slimy looking texture that its suppose to.

So I think its obvious High Voltage is listening to their fans and WANT to bring the best game they CAN(remember there are limits). Its not only the graphics high voltage is trying there best with Voice Chat(Wii Speak), Online(trying to get rid of Friend Codes),Controls(Wii Motion Plus, and Customization),  Ai(Watch the videos on the AI) and many other things.

There are many reasons why I made this friend.

1 Is to just show how much of a difference a few months gives.

2 Is that there seems to be some people who think High Voltage is all PR and doesn't care about what the fans want in the conduit. They also beleive the game will turn out bad.

3 Some people don't see why we should beleive that a company that has developed mostly shovelware could make a good game, and these people don't understand why every body is so hyped. Even if this game does turn out bad, I still won't be disappointed seeing as these developers seem to be putting all they have into it, and are trying their best something I can't say for other third party wii developers.

Anyway I want to end this thread by asking what else you might want to see added to the game. Skeptics please tell me what should be added to change your mind about the game as well.

I'm pretty satisfied personally so far it has a variety of different unique weapons(what I like the most in my FPS). The controls seem excellent, and the customization is nice as well.

The online seems to be good, but a little standard. Hopefully if they have time they could make up their own types of matches to go along with the basic default ones that most FPS have.

The graphics are good technically, but its still lacking some style in the art department. Fortunately it has already improved greatly from what we first saw, so it should turn out fine if it stays on this track.

I don't look too much into story of FPS games, but it seems they are trying to make one of the best ones in an FPS. Hopefully that works out, but if it doesn't I won't be too disappointed.

The AI seems to be pretty good as well, notice how when there is one enemy left it tries to run or some cases I think they even sacrifice themselves and run and charge at you. Either way they already mentioned they wanted that to be implemented properly as well.

I would like to see the game a decent length 10 hrs would be nice, but if it affects the quality then keep it short.

I would also like to see many difficulty settings and not just making the enemies have more HP or more Enemies as the only increase in difficulty.

I want to see some VERY complex puzzles with the ASE. Not just the basic find the invisible bomb, or open the door type puzzles we have been seeing so far.

Also the physics in the explosions are nice, but the environments don't seem to be affected by anything really. I would like to see the environments destroyable, and manipulable.

If half these things are added, and the game play is equivalent to that of other  First  Person Shooters then I could see the conduit getting 85+ reviews and  maybe good sales with them.

In an industry that believes Wii owners are idiots, HVS has had to fight an uphill battle.  Regardless of how the Conduit sells, or is rated, I can respect them for giving it their best shot.

I wasn't excited about this game at first, too busy playing Crysis Warhead, but I've now changed my mind.

I miss playing FPS on the Wii! The controls feel so cool (twisting the scope to zoom in on a headshot in MoH2 always comes to mind first), I think that's why Wii owners put up with crap games like MoH2, just because the controls make it fun.  We don't even need a great game, just a decent metacritic-80's rated FPS with a bit of multiplayer, and we'll be happy.

That's why I'll be playing CoD5 on Wii rather than any other platform.

Wii: 10^8

What I really want to see added to the Conduit is control point/assualt type multiplayer matches. I like to have tactical objectives beyond just racking up frags in my shooters, and I like being rewarded for rushing in and dying if it means my team has gained an important piece of ground.

Basically I want Battlefield or Team Fortress 2 to be playable on my Wii. :P

Any time I read about The Conduit and HVS, my belief that it's incredibly important that this game sells well solidifies. Not just sell well, but explode out of the launch gates and has relatively good legs.

Let's be honest - all 3rd party developers are watching this game. They are all watching to see if it will actually sell well. This game will give them the final proof that the Wii can move "Core" titles if the effort and polish is put into a game. This game can reverse the current developer mindset that the Wii is just "A shovelware platform" where they can make a quick buck.

The ball is in Sega's court now. We on the internet know of this game, but the masses do not. If Sega can break out a kick ass advertising campaign, market the game well and ensure its success, we can be assured that every single 3rd party dev out there will really start hammering the Wii with the truly great software we've been waiting for.

If this game doesn't sell at least 600k in the first week (and move onto becoming a million+ seller in the future), I will be severely disappointed.

By life end:

  • Wii- 100 million+
  • Xbox360- 35~40 million
  • PS3- 30 million
  • PSP- 30~32 million ------------- FAILURE
  • NDS- 85~90 million (Skeptical)  - FAILURE
  • NDS- 100 million+ (Optimistic) -- Success!

I think it will be a great game for the wii and very good looking but sub par compared to the 360 and ps3 graphics, and unless there are some inovative level designs and some new ideas and concepts brought to the gameplay it will be just another shooter maybe one of the few on the wii and that ill be its saving grace. hopefully awesome online system to. if it brings a fast pace fragfest splitscreen experience that will help also,

I personally love being able to network 4 360's together with 4 h3 copies and 16 controllers for a monster party if the wii can pull that off then were talking.

And that's there big problem. They keep waiting for someone else to do it for them haha. GH did it before RB and that property will forever suffer on the Ninty platforms unless it really changes its approach. Konami waited with Pro Evo Soccer and got lucky with a great game to release later but then screwed up by not once, but twice releasing it after it was supposed to release.

So now we have those watching the Conduit when instead of watching they shouldn't wait to see if a dev has success but whether or not they can beat that dev to success. This is why Sega, who's been very aggressive with the Wii platform, has seen some of the most success as a Wii developer. Same with Ubisoft and Activision with a couple of their properties.

I have no doubt in my mind that The Conduit will do well... I mean there is just too many good things going for it for it to not do 2 million at least, but don't hold me to that. And when that happens the 3rd parties that are waiting will forever be behind because of it. Because no longer will they have the opportunity to have the FPS that defined the Wii console as now it will be Conduit and Red Steel instead of whatever the rest could think of. And here's basically how it'll go down:

Cautious Devs- "wow I didn't believe you could do that on the Wii"

Sega and High Voltage Software- "And that is why you fail."

It's not fair to judge if Wii owners are interested in FPS by pinning it all on one game.

Especially from a developer that's never made anything rated over 80 on metacritic.

If, say, 8 established IP games were made from AAA devs like Valve, Rockstar, Bioware and so on, and none of them sold - then you'd have an argument.

@sc94597 - I think that what you're describing as High Voltage fixing complaints by fans is actually just the natural development cycle of games. Over the course of development, character models improve, lighting and texture effects are added. I really don't think that had anything to do with how people reacted to the screens.

I'm a mod, come to me if there's mod'n to do.

Chrizum is the best thing to happen to the internet, Period.

Serves me right for challenging his sales predictions!

Bet with dsisister44: Red Steel 2 will sell 1 million within it's first 365 days of sales.

I agree Zucas 100%. But the thing that is funny Sega is still a bit skeptical about trending new water too. In this article I found from gameindustry.biz, Darren Williams an A&R from Sega gives you the impression that they even have that idea that "3rd Parties" don't sell.

...I think it's unfortunate that ONE GAME has to basically be the determining factor as to whether or not a console will be viable in the future. =/

I agree that it's quite unfortunate that one game has to be the determining factor here--I mean, where would Sony be right now if developers watched sales of Heavenly Sword or Warhawk to gauge how they would sell on PS3?

However, I do believe that Nintendo realizes the importance being placed upon this game, and how it could affect their image with the core gamer.  Remember, it was pretty much all they showed at their American Fall Conference.  I think SEGA and Nintendo will be hyping this game up pretty heavily in the month or so before it comes out.
