I don't know why you feel this way. I loved mgs4. Perhaps Kojima is only human, he can't please all. The series has always had lots of cutscenes and codec conversations btw, don't know why you find that to be a problem now.

I didn't write this. The cutscenes are fine with me as well as the codec. The only cutscene I didn't like was the wedding one. The codecs weren't as terrible as MGS2, but they did get annoying when you defeated a boss. Couldn't there be another way to tell the back story of the bosses?

Maybe the bosses should've explained the backstories themselves.  For example, just before Sniper Wolf died in MGS1, she explained what her life was like without any help.

Nothing screams 'evil twisted demented machine women' like a long monologue!

I suppose it could have worked if they did it before dying, though.

And it would be cool if you could codec Drebin at any point, just to hear his opinion on things.

Or at least see his face when he is busy monologuing.

Even cooler would be some video or screenshots to accompany the story, like images of crying wolf murdering the people of her village.

I love the little fourth-wall-breaking mentions of the PS3 through the game, though

EDIT: He had to curb the FoxDie, though. The game was meant to tie up all loose strings around Solid Snake, and leaving him as a ticking time bomb that could destroy the human race wasn't a very good way to do that. And who would want to see Snake die?

I thought the ending was good enough to negate every gripe you have about the story

^ I agree about the wedding scene. It's when I first discovered that Meryl has man arms. Brought her hotness down like three levels for me. :(

Ok, they weren't that bad.

Beside, she's been in the military for years. What'd you expect.

It's not the opinion of the OP it's an article people...

Anyway MGS4 was a good game but it didn't even come close to MGS3 or the original in terms of quality in both gameplay and story.

I disagree.  The controls were better than previous MGS games and the story didn't leave any cliffhangers like the previous MGS games.  Previous MGS games had great gameplay and stories but MGS4 improved overall all of them.

I agree that the gameplay/controls was the best in MGS4. The gameplay time was pretty short once you remove all the cutscenes and codecs. One hour for each chapter. As for the story, MGS4 was the weakest. The story didn't hook me until Act III. Bringing Big Boss was both shocking and stupid.

Metal Gear Solid 1 remains the best imo. While the story was simple at the beginning, just disarm and save the hostages, it really got interesting. The twists were amazing. It had a good balance of cutscenes and gameplay. There were a lot of epic moments in MGS1. The bosses actually had personality unlike MGS4.
