Forums - Microsoft - 3 Red Lights Question

Did you mod it yourself?

MS isn't going to help you but there are some kits you can purchase out there that are supposed to fix RROD. If you have the technical know how you can do it yourself or maybe look to the person who modded it for you and see if they will repair it for a fee.

I don't mess with the 360 but I've done some minor repairs and replacements of components on my original Xbox. I have very minimal soldering skills and technical prowess but was able to do it myself. Check out xbox-scene.com and you'll more than likely find what out what you need to.

NO. I don´t know anything about this sort of things. I bought it already modded. I´m just going to look for people that do it. I´ll wait till I have to and find someone to fix it.

Man, xbox-scene, I used to be on that site all the time, back when I was gonna write an XB emulator in VB6. Christ, I was such a nub it's unbearable to think of.

Hey, I was 12.

I´m not an expert eather but here in germany mod shops rapair RROD for about sixty euros... the better mod shops will also give you the full waranty MS does if you buy it directly from them... also you shouldn´t coplain about having to spent some extra cash if you get games for free... and blaming MS is just childish IMO...

Well, ok. But When I did this to Sony, their products worked for years and years. So the lesson here kids is, only pirate Sony products. :D

Kidding, I´was just mad for having to spend money, specially when you don´t expect to. Who likes it?

Is there any possibillity to find out if your console has a mod chip or maybe just a flashed DVD-drive ?

If it has just a flashed DVD-drive you can send it to Microsoft without any bad feelings. They won't notice that.

I have no idea how to find that out. And I´m not gonna pen my console, because I could do some damage and I wouldn´t be able to repair it anymore.

It doesn´t matter if its chiped or flashed... in both cases the console was opened and MS will know... or do you guys think Bill Gates has those huge glasses for no reaon ???

Best bet is to find someone reliable who can fix it at a good price... doing the X-clamp fix and adding an additional cooler will fix the problem for good im 95% of all cases... let me dig up my favorite modshops service... ah here we go...

From gamefreax germany:

"There are several reasons for the ring of death to suddenly appear. With this repair we fix all the existing and currently known reasons. We make the following ammendmends to your Xbox360:

  • remove the GPU's X-Clamp
  • rebuild all solder contacts of the GPU
  • clean and apply new cooling paste to the GPU
  • install gpu heat sink with special screws and without X-Clamp to avoid unnecessary tension to the mainboard
  • apply cooling pads to the four ram chips wich are thick enough to keep the ram chips in place (it is a known problem that the ram chips can shift due to overheating)

Allthough the repair is successfull on a long term in 95% of all cases, we are not able to give a long time warranty on this repair. If the problem should appear for a second time we do a second repair for free."

It costs 60 euros for the fix and x-clamp fix and 75 euros for that and a extra cooler... I got the extra cooler right when I had it moded just to be save...
