Forums - PC - Alternative Keyboard/Mouse Solution for Couch Potatoes?

If you could find a way to use one of these with your PC, I'd recommend it above pretty much everything else. Including keyboard + mouse. Only thing is, I don't think there are drivers designed for PC. It'll connect via USB, but without drivers, it's gonna be hard to integrate (although I'm sure somebody out there's adapted it).

It's the FragFX. With all the functions of your typical mouse, plus four Playstation face buttons on the side, plus three trigger buttons on the nunchuck, you've got pretty much all of the buttons covered that any FPS would ever require. Map the D-pad to be four more buttons, and there's no way you need anything to fit any extra keys (unless your game requires 1-9 as well, then you're just getting ridiculous. Most games have a second optional feature to just rotate through your weapons using two buttons).

Then, here's where it's better than keyboard + mouse - you've got the accuracy of a mouse, plus the versatility of an analog stick. WASD? Incredibly inferior to analog. Use both analog + mouse and you're pretty much guaranteed to have the best control possible.

Also has motion sensing of the SIXAXIS in the nunchuck, as well as rumble in both nunchuck and mouse.

Now that I've covered functionality, let's talk price. I'm not sure where you'd find it (Splitfish's website doesn't mention much about ordering or where to find... talks a lot about preordering, at expensive prices, even though the product is already out), so I checked Amazon and eBay. Amazon doesn't have it (not available). eBay has it for between $26 and $70. I'd lean closer to the $70, though, since those $26 ones are just early in the bidding process.

As for this thing's predecessor, EdgeFX (which has all the same features minus motion sensing, and it's not quite as sleek looking), you can find it on Amazon for $30.

Just remember - if you buy it, it may not be the easiest thing to integrate for your PC. I'm certain it can be done, but it may be complicated.

Splitfish FragFX. Currently the only hybrid stick/mouse controller in circulation, unfortunately, not currently in production, and only made as a wired controller.

Not a replacement for HTPC applications, as you still need a keyboard for the PC half. Not usable as there are no officially supported Windows drivers available. And did I not mention it's wired?

Wireless version was supposed to be released months ago. No word from Splitfish.

Had one for less than a week before RMAing it since it wasn't working properly. QC not the best. Not made of quality components. The reason there's still demand for it is because mouse aiming does provide an advantage in FPS games when playing online against standard controller players when the peripheral is working properly.

For home theater, Windows Media Center remotes are available, but do require the installation of an IR input panel and receiver. They work fine although only when WMC is open, meaning you still need the keyboard to initially power up the system before pushing the WMC button on the remote to open the program.

Well, he didn't say it needed to be wireless. =p

Wires are so last generation!

Actually, to the hardcore FPS player, wired components are necessary. There's a greater lag time induced by wireless components. I've actually seen it matter in games of UT and the like (y'know, super fast-paced games). It's nuts.

Although, I'm nowhere near good enough (like 99% of gamers out there) for it to matter significantly. Garcian Smith here is likely one of those 99%.

I used to use a wireless bluetooth keyboard/mouse. One of the problems is whenever the batteries start to drop in voltage, you lose input. Not all, but enough to lose keystrokes. Not that I game competitively, but was still very annoying.

The input for wireless PC peripherals is a LOT more unreliable than any of the consoles in terms of responsiveness and handling dropped voltage. It has never been an issue with the Wii remote, 360 wireless or DS3 controller.

I'm sure I could buy better wireless input devices, but they've already been replaced with wired ones tailored for gaming.

Get a joystick and play nothing but MS Flight Simulator X, it's beautiful on the big screen.

Really though, 360 controller and wireless KB+M is the way to go.

PC + Wii owners unite.  Our last-gen dying platforms have access to nearly every 90+ rated game this gen.  Building a PC that visually outperforms PS360 is cheap and easy.    Oct 7th 2010 predictions (made Dec 17th '08)

That will have some ideas for input devices. I've browsed AVSforum for a while and haven't really seen a practical solution besides a wireless kb+mouse. They do have media center themed keyboards with integrated trackballs & touchpads which would eliminate the need for having 2 devices.

Gaming would most likely have to use the MS 360 Gamepad. It works with almost all newer games but some of the older games compatibility might be an issue.

Picking out a HTPC case is probably the most annoying part.  I've been shopping for a case for a while now.  My advice would be to just browse newegg and find one with features you like for a price you're wanting to spend.  It's hard matching up a case with in your budget that has all the features you want and actually looks good.
