Let's be fair; Microsoft launched in the three main markets simultaneously but were heavily supply constrained.  Their sales figures at the beginning did not reflect the demand for the console.

The goal was to be #1, not trying to just outsell the 360. Whatever happen this Gen, Sony has tons of work to do. They need to focus on the consumer's need and think of who they are trying to sell their console to since they clearly have forgotten.

Even though I believe that one day the PS3 will eventually pass the 360, it won't really mean much in the long run for a few reasons.

No matter which ends up with more sales, the best either can achieve is a distant second. This is not going to determine whether is the lead development console because the lead over the 3rd place console will only be a few million.

To be fair the 20 gig Playstation 3 sold at the $499.99 pricepoint in 2006, but you make an excellent point.  The PS3 is trailing the PS2 at the same point in it's life but the PS2 was significantly cheaper. 

 

 

 The 20 gigger was almost immediatly discountinued. Sony barely restocked them at all when they werent even discountinued.

The 20gb model was selling in Japan until early this year when both it and the 60gb PS3 were discontinued by Sony.
