I was thinking it's probably not to steep at my local pawn shop... though I'm loath to buy some poor kid's PS3 who's mom needed more crack.

Killing the 360 ... a deadly blow ....
Let them first catch up with the 5 (potentially 6) millions units gap before talking about an execution ...
Same thing for the total number of games sold ... pfff
Evan Wells (Uncharted 2): I think the differences that you see between any two games has much more to do with the developer than whether it’s on the Xbox or PS3.
i think the price is pretty spot on. Just cuz people outside of sony are pissin in their pants doesnt mean that sony will do the same. im sure they are cool, calm, and collected, smiling with their gameplan. so sit back, and watch a fun and competitive holiday season :0

Most writers in the world are not bald. And let's make it clear that these 'haircuts' are worth some 200 bucks. So get some hair growth tonic.
And those five for a dollar pens don't write, all they do is sing nursery rhymes. People who consider themselves writers are going to buy one of the other two pens.
Moving on from that confusing metaphor, I actually think the analyst is right. A price cut of even $50, mixed with LBP and Resistance 2, with the promise of more games to come, could be the edge that Sony needs.
Of course, it will not be easy. They will make even more of a loss on each console sold, and I don't think Sony would do that. They are focusing on profit now.
While it would certainly help them, I'm not sure it would do so enough to make up for what it is costing them.
I trust Sony to do the smart thing here, whatever that may be.
Before anybody says sony have no brains, how have two of their three consoles destroyed and on occasion, bankrupted the competition?
Sony needs Ken Kutaragi back.
oh man,,,, 299$ before the lunch of LBP thats huge

The problem with that straterfy is wait to long and MS has to much strength to kill with the death blow. 360 has been out three years and has been in the lead (the first year no next gen competation), if it can keep the lead through 2009 it wont matter if sony comes in the big blow cause its too late with the WII supposed HD launch in 2011 expect MS to launch around then. 2010 Sony takes over its too late the next gen will be starting up |
That's right: but Sony must only avoid overkill, they must try to gain again some ground, but giving MS the impression that its advantage may last still quite a long time until PS3 is strong enough to attack without risking a pyrrhic victory. So a huge price cut now would definitely risk overkill, while a smaller cut, just to regain a little WW lead in case XB360 nice period lasts longer, would be fine, and anyway, if PS3 yearly sales are already higher than Sony's predictions, a Xmas demand much higher couldn't be met, so a big price cut would be wasted. I say Sony must build up strength before really hitting also because it looks like, not considering PR hype, it didn't really predict its sales could be so much better than last year, so now they are unprepared to fully deploy their strength, and not having produced enough to have further costs reduction before Xmas (one happened anyway with the new autumn list prices for components, bud predicting and ordering bigger quantities more early they could have negotiated further reductions that they won't obtain if they are forced to ask them now, pressed and unable to negotiate), it would be very expensive too. So I agree that Sony really must avoid MS widens again the gap, but for the moment without trying stronger actions. facts may prove me wrong, anyway, if Sony managed to hide to us and, more important, to MS, an higher strength than it appears.
You think the price is funny get this...
My mate reckons the price is high due to BluRay dev costs coz he read it somewhere.
He says he is going to wait until Sony bring out a version without BluRay as he doesnt watch movies and it will be much cheaper.
I didnt have the heart to correct him.
Actually Sony might be able to deal with a 100$ price cut at this point fine as the amount of games available is much bigger now and thus the amount of money they recoup from game sales should be quite a lot bigger than what they had just one year ago. And with the wider selection the chance that someone buying a new PS3 also picks up 3-4 games is bigger, which should help balance out the loss.
That said I agree that the current price is not bad, you are getting a lot more than with the competing systems. The problem Sony have though is that they have struggled to educate the market on these advantages (Blu-Ray, standard replaceable HD, built-in web browser, printing support, mouse+keyboard support, built-in wireless etc.)
I really think the PS3 should get a price cut, in line with the holidays. Gears 2 will not be the top selling game these holidays (some wii title will be), but it will move consoles, many consoles.
BUT, if the PS3 is still standing (so within striking distance of the 360) by the end of these holidays, a Price cut won't be a tide-turner, it'd be the death blow to the 360. I'm guessing Sony is banking on that.
Personally, I don't think Price-Cut is a must, it'd be great, but a great bundle would be much more appealing.
| Millennium said: The thing is, the PS3 isn't overpriced; it's overengineered. Its debut price frankly should have been even higher than it was, and that's the whole problem: Sony has made a system that can't be sold profitably for an amount that people are willing to pay for a game console. Rather than scale the technology back to something that could sell for a price people would pay, they pulled an Icarus: they pushed the limits too far and got burned. |
I think that if the ps3 had a price cut it sales would spike a lot and stay way above what they are now. A ps3 at 299 (us) damn...
