Forums - Sales - Capcom "Cautiously Optimistic" re: MM9 Sales; Pre-Emptively Debunks All Figures

NPD has put pressure on publishers to keep from publicly acknowledging VGC's sales figures as valid because them doing so was undermining their business model. Publishers were quick to acquiesce due to long standing business relationships and contracts.

VGC could be right on the money for a major publishers entire catalog but they won't admit it now thanks to NPD's efforts.

This has nothing to do with NPD, they don't even track downloads.

Not the point.  Any credibility given to VGC, whether it be download sales or retails sales, undermines NPD's business model.

And I'm not telling you this out of speculation, I'm telling you this from industry knowledge.

Right, it's all a big conspiracy.

The main issue with WiiWare/VC numbers is that (and DKII or others can correct me), is that there's no way to really validate much of anything by Nintendo, Capcom, or anyone else.

For that matter, Capcom may not even know what the real number is themselves.

XBLA numbers aren't that way though, ours are pretty much the industry standard at this point outside of the piecemeal numbers that MS gives developers and the public.

FYI: Mega Man 9 did 24,000 on XBLA in 3 days...Much lower than WiiWare. So I guess the question turns to what the validation methods for WW games are.

The best comparison would be for a user to check leaderboards for Mega Man 9 on both the XBLA, PSN and WiiWare version and extrapolate from there, using the XBLA Leaderboards and unit sales from there to draw a close comparison.

I'm gonna go ahead and say that considering they get a $ percentage of every copy downloaded, they do know the real numbers,

It's not conspiracy, it's playing hard ball.   You've never dealt with big business before, have you?

And like I just stated, this isn't speculation, it's first hand industry knowledge.    You can believe what you want but it won't change the facts.

Nice conspiracy theory, but if he made this comment after being pressured by NPD as an attempt to discredit VGC then he didn't do a very good job as he didn't even mention the site.

Sorry, but I need more than "I have industry knowledge" by some random poster on an internet forum where anyone can claim anything.

Like I said, we'll probably get MM9 numbers in their financial report, so we'll see how well it sold then.

No, Viper1 has inside industry knowledge and he's telling us it's a big conspiracy theory. My friend's brother's cousin's sister's boyfriend's father works for EA and he told his son that, of course being the good boyfriend, he told his girlfriend, she told her cousin, he told his brother, he then told my friend who told me that the whole industry is trying to bring down VGChartz, OH NOEZ.

Well, I think leaderboards are split by region, at least on PSN, so you would need to get rankings from all four regions, Asia, Japan, Pal, and NA.

I have Asian PSN version, there are 742 people on the "All Clear Ranking" (yeah, we're a pretty small region compared to the others), of course this only covers people who completed the game.

Well in Warhawk there are over 700k in the leaderboard......

So you honestly think that Nintendo uploads cash into Capcom's coffers on Digital downloads 1 week after each given game debuts on the market?

If so, I'd think they need to hire a few more employees for accounting :-p

In all seriousness: The reason my XBLA charts are so sought after is that Microsof typically pays developers every 3 months for their games. I don't think Nintendo is much different. But if you want to think so, go ahead.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.
