First of all, what's the point of having such a powerful and expensive CPU if it takes 3+ years for it to even begin to showing a slight increase in power over the 360?
The PS3 hasn't been on the market for 2 years yet, many people argee with me advantages have already been clearly shown in PS3 exclusives. Resistance 2 will be available 2 years after the PS3's North American launch, Killzone 2 will be available 2 years after the European PS3 launch. Those are two very eye catching games, but there's enough technical headroom to push Killzone 3 and Resistance 3 much further.
Another point is that game engines were well overdue for modernization and better optimization. Using PS3 coding methods PC/360 game engines perform better as well and the PS3 paves the way for a distant future PS4 which will function even more parallel.
Who cares if the PS3 can push a few more polygons ,textures, and lighting effects than 360?
I do. But the PS3 can do far more, not as minor as you think.
I can assure you that those minor improvements will not make a game better.
Our ears and eyes are very important human sensory organs, but the advantages go much further than just visual and audio improvements. It also regards game complexity, the amount of stuff you can do on screen simultaneously, more advanced physics, better AI routines, etc. The potential to grow in all such regards is very significant for the PS3. Soon enough you will probably understand what I am referring to today.
Looks to me that the PS3 will take, at the very least, 2 more years to pass the 360 provided it pulls some amazing sales.
I predict much sooner than that. I have been right before, some VGChartz staff in the past were skeptical when I foretold the PS3 would start selling better worldwide for Christmas 2007 than the 360 (despite the release of Halo 3, people called me crazy, the 360 was said to stay ahead due to its pricing advantage and Halo according to most people here).
