Blu-ray is still doing better than DVD was at this timepoint. I don't understand those who say it will flop. What did they expect, that Blu-ray will beat DVD on day one?

The Blu-Ray market is set to triple in 2008 (both stand-alone player sales and software sales) compared to 2007. According to research data a vast majority of PS3 owners in the US own HDTVs and watch Blu-Ray movies. With pricedrops PS3, standalone Blu-Ray player and software sales will go up.

I think a lot of negatism has to do with console fans of rival consoles, especially many 360 fans want things to be negative because it comes by default with the PS3 and not with other consoles.

You are right Rome wasn't built in a day. Not everyone will buy a HDTV, PS3 or standalone Blu-Ray player day one. DVD's unusual quick victory over VHS (just 6 years until it outsold the at the time well established format) has been widely applauded.

Well on this forum, people that tend to be positive about bluray adoption are mostly ps3 purchasers who have to justify why they are paying more for a console that thus far has not really shown any gaming advantages. Bluray is that jsutification.

The more Sony pumps out videogame systems, the larger BD will get. Dont rely on people to actually buy stand alone players. Sneaking sales is what id call Sonys plot.

Beating HD-DVD was the easy part. Beating the entrenched standard is where I believe Blu-Ray will falter. DVD had many advantages that it could boast of over VHS: durability, random access, extras, multiple languages, and yes, better image and sound quality. Blu-Ray's only advantage over DVD is in image and sound quality, and then only to a degree that leaves many people wondering if it's really worth the price. Overcoming that obstacle will be what makes or breaks the format.

Honestly, I think Blu-Ray will become the next laserdisc: a niche format for technophiles, but nowhere near the mainstream.

Complexity is not depth. Machismo is not maturity. Obsession is not dedication. Tedium is not challenge. Support gaming: support the Wii.

What do I hate about modern gaming? I hate tedium replacing challenge, complexity replacing depth, and domination replacing entertainment. I hate the outsourcing of mechanics to physics textbooks, art direction to photocopiers, and story to cheap Hollywood screenwriters. I hate the confusion of obsession with dedication, style with substance, new with gimmicky, old with obsolete, new with evolutionary, and old with time-tested.
There is much to hate about modern gaming. That is why I support the Wii.

Considering that the adoption of the BR has been faster than the adoption of the DVD which was arguable a far superior upgrade in quality from the VCR than the BR is to DVD, I think BR market share is doing fine.

Ignoring all the Sony BS about 50% market share by xmas 2008, the amount of public interest and manufactorer support has been very positive. That being said, there is no reason to adopt BR at this stage unless you have a HDTV.

People seem to forget that Blu-Ray players also play DVDs, something the jump between VHS and DVD didn't have and that's an advantage for the BD players, if people buy BD players they won't have to throw away their DVD collections.

Another thing to consider is the coming of the digital television that is going to send HD channels through airwaves, all TV programming will be on HD and that will force to release TV series on Blu-Ray

In player sales.... when you count the PS3 as a player.  In Disc sales... it's behind by tens of millions.  When Blu-ray was at 15 million in the US... DVD was at over 60 million in a comparable timeframe.

Still blu-ray should still succeed the movie companies will push for being able to resell there movies every time.

Even if it doesn't replaced DVD as the dominant format it'll still be around, it's not going to go UMD or anything.  It'd be a more successful Laserdisc, something that the videophiles and moviephiles get and use until the next better format comes along.

Can you quote a source?

DVD was launched in March 1997 & BR in March 2006. I cannot find any sales record and am genuinely interest in the volume each respective format have sold in those time.
