Forums - PC - Warhammer Online Sells .5 Million first week

Well that's definitely a promising start. Is it a possibility that it could.... no I can't even speak the words.

Just kiss the tip.

This game is beyond amazing.

i don't think we'll ever see WOW dethroned, not after the amount of hours people have pumped into the game..

Another WoW killer comes and goes, same old same old.

There are things I like and dislike about this game but I expect it to be one of the few MMO games which can actually attract and maintain a fairly large userbase (~1 Million or more) and hold it for a fairly long time (2+ years) ...

To a certain extent, I wish that Mythic would have stepped a little further away from WoW teritory and done something more unusual in terms of gameplay dynamics ... My personal idea at this point in time would be to allow gamers to define their own skills and abilities to compliment their class abilities; these abilities don't have to be nearly as strong as the default class abilities, but it would create a sort of sell balancing system because as one class becomes considered "Uber" people would be better able to adjust their play style to counter that class without expecting Mythic to nerf their class.

I have a feeling this game will draw more crowd from the people that are not playing WoW, all like 5 of them, then it will from the WoW userbase.

WoW is a monster, and isn't a good basis for comparison. The game doesn't need to come close to WoW's numbers to be considered successful. If they can maintain ~300k subscriptions, they should be okay - and it looks like they'll do that easily. 1 million+ subscriptions would be huge; if they hit numbers like that, the game will be a major cash cow. Personally, I expect somewhere between 500k and 700k subscriptions when things settle down. (Keep in mind, boxes sold at retail and long-term subscription numbers aren't the same thing.)

It's funny how there is a WoW at the top of the page for me.

I really like this game. Definetly awesome and worthy of every sale.

I know shortly after TBC came out a lot of people were talking about quitting and going to Warhammer when it came out (WoW=Waiting on Warhammer meme, etc).  Though I think most were idle threats used whenever people wanted to complain about something.  I guess it was delayed extensively because back then I want to say it was coming out relatively soon, or at least not this late.

I'd say a lot has to do with how WotLK does, if a lot of people aren't satisfied with it I can see many of them going over to Warhammer.  I can see them taking a lot of people from AoC as well, but I'd guess a lot of those are WoW players anyway.

Anyways, impressions seem to be more positive than for AoC, so I expect it will have a better chance at retaining subscriptions.

If WOTLK wasn't coming out on the 13th of November, this opening bow by WAR would be a solid start, but WOTLK is going to sell 2-3 million copies on DAY 1, and probably over 3 million in week 1. Sure, it's going to be alot of WoWer buying into the hype, but that just means those folks aren't going to jump ship. I'm a WoW guy, and I spent a week in the Beta for WAR...it's good...better than I expected, after AoC, LOTRO and Vanguard, which were vaunted to be WoW killers...all failed to do so. WAR has some nice stuff, but it's spiral improvements, not fundamental changes to make me say...ooohh....let me stop playing a game I've dedicated nearly 3 years and countless hours towards.
