If you own a non HD system and don't want it to look like crap and full of Jaggies, Plasmas are MUCH better. Really their picture quality is better overall too. I play my Wii and PS2 on a 42 inch Samsung Plasma (Wii with component cables) and my friend plays his Wii with component cables on his LCD... and man let me tell you, the difference between quality of my non-HD games on my TV and his non-HD games on his TV is unbelievable. Even his 360 looks better on my TV than on his. I HIGHLY recommend Plasma over LCD.

my friend has a Sony Bravia and i have a Sony Grand Wega. I used to own a Wii. I had no major jaggy problems and my friend had WAY less then I did on his Bravia. For LCDs go Sony. But if you can wait, wait till the end of the year for Sony's OLCD TVs. They will blow your mind (1m:1 picture quality per pixel)

When you say OLCD, what do you mean by that? The only thing like that I've heard if is OLED, are they like the same thing?

My rents have a 46" sharp aquos.  I'm in love with it.  Very sharp colors, and very fast for an LCD (mitigating a Plasma advantage).  Also, if you check around you can get last years model within your price range.  I saw it at sears one time for $1899.  If you don't mind buying online, it's been on amazon.com for $1799 + $179 for shipping.  Also, if like me you decide that you don't really need 1080p (since you'll only get 1080p with blu-ray or HD-DVD), and you have the space, my new plan is to get a front projector.  Amazon.com has a mitsubishi model that's 720p and has gotten good reviews for $850.  Add in the $100 screen and you are at half the price and several times the screen size.

Screen burn is a myth. Yeah, if you're dumb enough to leave the pause screen up for 10 hours a day, you're going to get "burned"...

To prevent burn, it's simple. Don't leave your TV with the same image displaying for over an hour. The pixels are also more likely to be damaged in the first 150-250 hours of their life when they are "newest". If you're really concerned, lower your contrast below 50%. You may experience what's known as "ghosting", but it's nothing to be alarmed about.

Go to a retailer. Have them turn off a plasma. It's been running on the same loop for God knows how long! I guarantee you you wont see screen burn.

As for longevity, a typical plasma has a half-life of about 30,000-50,000 hours. That's 8 hours a day for 9 years minimum.

...and again, I implore you to visit a retailer and compare their HD loop on the two types of televisions.

The only reason LCD's look like ass on Wii compared to plasma is because the plasma screen has a better scaler, or it doesn't have to worry about scaling to its native resolution. LCD's do. If you have an external scaler to run your wii signal through, it looks just as good on an LCD as it does on a plasma.

Maybe even better.

Witty signature here...

Wii: 14 million by January  I sold myself short

360: 13 million by January I sold microsoft short, but not as bad as Nintendo.

PS3: 6 million by January. If it approaches 8 mil i'll eat crow  Mnn Crow is yummy.

With these results, I've determined that I suck at long term predictions, and will not long term predict anything ever again. Thus spaketh Crono.

First off, sonys sets are good, but overpriced

Secondly, OLEDs are constantly getting delayed, so much so that some people are calling them the SEDTV of '07. Furthermore, the first OLEDs are going to be very small screens, nothing near 40 inches. Also, the technology is unproven and test OLED displays have had very short display life compared to CRT/LDC/Plasma. My advice is to hold off on OLED until the technology is proven.

Thirs, I'm pretty sure you meant 1m:1 contrast ratio, since there is no such thing as "1m:1 picture quality per pixel". Anyways, contrast ratio is always a dumb way to measure the PQ of a display since manufacturers do all sorts of bull when it comes to measuring contrast.

To the OP, go to AVSforum.com and read the threads in LCD and Plasma forums, its underdisplay technology. The people there are far more knowledgeble than hear, and many of them have many HDTVs from different makers.

Track down a CRT HD if you have the space. Especially if you play any Playstation 2 + eariler videogames, and/or will be watching regular DVDs.

If not, at least go DLP or Plasma. LCD tech is the bottom tier, the upgrade will be worth it. You're going to have to be staring at this thing for at least a couple years, TVs aren't something to nickel-and-dime over.

It really doesn't make sense to hunt (and pay) for 1080p in the 37-40 inch range, lol. 46" and over maybe.
