Forums - Gaming - Are JRPGs important anymore?

Games from Japan are just not that important anymore like they were back in the Snes days I think.

Only 3 JRPG franchises have ever been important, and they're still important today, so yes.

FF series, Pokemon and Dragons Quest are the three main JRPG series. Any other JRPG series is irrelevant.

Kingdom Heart? I suppose you can add that to FF but I consider it a seperate and distinct series.

Folks, the market is changing. I've always approved of the concept of making console gaming more mainstream. And I've always believed that as a media, the games of console gaming can influence the mainstream. This is what I thought five years ago. And now, reality had shown its ugly head.

JRPG are being pushed to the back burner because, as a general statement, the mainstream are the "instant gradification" types. To follow an engrossing storyline while relying on character stats just isn't mainstream according to current trends. And like someone said, JRPG's are expensive to make especially on current gen non-handhelds. So the most viable platform for JRPG's are handhelds such as the DS and the PSP. Less cost, greater userbase, less risk. And more "traditional" JRPG players, such as myself, are dying out. you don't get many 36 year old gamers, even less 36 year old JRPG fans.

Most developers are going to do what makes more money by catering to the largest demograph of a particular platform. Catering to specific groups of gamers was the norm, but sadly, it's now the expection with JRPG's being one of those exceptions.

Hackers are poor nerds who don't wash.

WRPGs are becoming more popular than JRPGs.

@ Zen

You got rid of your PS3? Why?

And just for good measure:

@outlaw

Let my brother "borrow" it.

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

Have RPG's ever been important in terms of winning the console warz?

In terms of winning the console wars?  No.

But they've always been in abundance on the console that won the ware the past two generations.

And as we know, Microsoft is attempting to copy/paste what Sony did last generation, and the one before to win.  Which is why it's weird that they're getting all the JRPG support, and are the lowest sellers in Japan.  It spurred this thread, cause it looks like the console that is not in first place will get the bulk of JRPGs, while the console in first place won't get them.

I think FFVII and X were both crucial to the Playstation consoles, and their dominance.

ToV, LO are both worthy of buying an X360... just like FFvXIII and WKC are worthy of a PS3.

@OP
Pokemon sales say yes
