Forums - Sony - Sony is phasing out the 60 gb to be replaced by the 80gb

AHHHH CONFUSION everywhere?!!!!! What to do?

I think, besides an early surge from the $600 to $500 clearance sale, this debacle will stagnate sales.

When a device keeps going through changes only 8 months into its life it makes consumers wait until they've come out with the final "non-obsolete" system, especially when you are paying over half-a-grand.

60GB is techincally better with BC and the only other difference is 20GB less.  Also, many consoles went through changes this early into the life cycle, including the PS2 I believe.

Right now you can only get the 60GB, and it's been that way for months.  It's now $100 cheaper, so lots of people are buying it.

Really I mean how much can this emotion chip be? Like 5 cents I guess. It is a chip that has already been designed on silicon, so how much could it really cost.
The only logical thing that comes to my mind is that sony can to the backward compatibility with software, so they don't think they need this chip anymore. I really don't understand what all this fuss about backward compatibility is anyway, you probably still have your ps2 if you bought a ps3 so??

also @eatrice

While what you say is mainly true, but people don't wait for a final version for pc's do they. If sony keeps up increasing the hard disk and keeping the price the same, I guess they will start buying it anyway.

I have the PAL console with software retrocompatibility and it is great .

The 60Gb isnt obsolete ,it only has 20 Gb less or hard disk .It includes everything else and you can upgrade the harddrive yourself for few money .

People should stop trolling ,there are millions of 60Gb already produced and the price cut is effective and will last a lot of time .By the time there isnt a single 60Gb console anymore Sony will have announced a lot of things and maybe even lowered further the price .

windbane said; I want to remind people that upscaling is done through software emulation, and that's been the big news so far concerning BC. All PS1/PS2 games are upscaled now. As BC approaches 100% on the 80GB it will become a better deal, but it's still only 20GB. You can upgrade the PS3 with whatever HD you want.

No its not.

The PS3 takes the frame that is rendered and is about to be outputted, then runs it through the same upconversion process as the DVD's.

Games lag when they are set to upscale because of this process, that is, the PS3 buffers a couple frames (I think its 3, but I'm not 100% on this)

If you say so. You have a link?

I thought this was well known....

Regardless, the Graphics Synthesizer is still in the Euro PS3's. Sony just removed the Emotion Engine CPU. So, this means the software emulation is entirely done in software, and the graphics are still rendered by hardware. This means the only way to upscale is the method I described, that is until Sony impliments true software BC and actualy renders the games at a higher resolution.

I'm starting to hear conflicting points.

It is well known that the EE was removed from European PS3's, but that the GS was left. This made sense, cause the setup was similar to this:

Recently, I listened to a 1up podcast that said EE+GS were both on one chip, and that it was being removed.

Does anyone have indisputable evidence either way that the EE and GS was a two chip setup and only EE was removed, or that EE+GS were removed because it was only on one chip???

Were you answering my question, Andir? And if you are ... what's the answer? lol

Oh, sorry, the EE+GS were one chip as your second picture shows. Both are gone in the newer PS3. EE is the Emotion Engine (Physics + CPU) and the GS was the Graphics Synthesizer. They consolidated them to one chip. There's really no need to keep the GS without the EE since the new RSX replaces the GS. Think of it like an nVidia 5500 vs an nVidia 7900, the RSX handles everything the old GS would seamlessly. They are direct descendants. Now, as far as backwards compatibility, all Sony has to do is change the calls for the old GS to run off the RSX and all the old EE calls to the Cell in a wrapper functions on the PPU and a SPU or two if needed.

Running the GS on RSX is like running an old DirectX/OpenGL game on a new DirectX/OpenGL card.

Ah, muchas gracias, señor.

I've always heard that only the EE was removed and they left the GS intact. Then I heard that they were both on one chip.

Sinear, do you have refuting evidence? You sound pretty convinced that the GS is still in the Euro PS3's.
