Fortunately it looks like it's just speculation. I didn't really fancy playing Half Life 3 Beta in a browser with ads replacing the cut scenes,

Valve crushes Google acquisition talk

Valve has declared that any reports it is about to be acquired by Google are "100 per cent rumour", according to consumer site Spong.

Reports began this morning, when The Inquirer suggested Google was to swoop for the developer in order to gain access to the Steam delivery service.

Google has also labelled the report as "rumour and speculation".

Nooo!

Good thing it's not true. What is this, the third pure speculation article about Valve this week? Rentals coming to Steam, a Portal Prelude that's actually just fanmade (confused a few sites), and this?

Valve is awesome, but don't expect them to deviate too much from what's expected.

Valve are on top of the world now, why would they let anyone buy them? I don't believe this for a second.

Valve and Blizzard right now are probably the companies that can't be bullied or just plain bought out if there were such big restrictions. Whatever they make is guaranteed to be a million seller and there are no other companies that can boast such an accomplishment. It would take a serious force of nature for them to serve to others. Even if we are talking Google.

Yes, they were bought by Activision. Better that than EA getting their filthy paws on another great dev!

They were part of Vivendi Universal and got transferred over to Activision, they didn't sell themselves. What I'm trying to say is that even if Vivendi or now Activision try to meddle in their development they don't really have to put up with it. I was also under the impression that Blizzard Activision put Blizzard in a freer position than the one they were in while under Vivendi. Anyone out there would pay out the nose to have those developers work for them. It's the same for Valve.
