Forums - Nintendo - A friendly little Nintendo discussion (Warning: Very long opening post)

I honestly was so surprised when I learned that the N64 was criticized! I was so happy with it. I wish it sold more. Hell, I wish the GCN sold more. Such a great library of games that people didn't get to play. Oh well, their loss.

That's very true. Well, atleast Nintendo got great attach rates(both Mario 64 and Melee have like 1 copy sold for every 3 consoles sold), and made an awesome profit on the GCN(not sure about the 64, but I assume they did there too).

I think you maybe are getting older, simple as that, you enjoy Games but in a different way then before, getting less hyped is a sign of it, thats my conclusion.

They've never lost money on any of their consoles. So, yeah. Honestly. As of now, as long as they keep up their excellent first party game lineup. I don't care if they don't sell well. As long as I get to play.

Ah, but I'm not getting less hyped in general. I hyped Brawl to no end for well over 6 months before it's release. So I don't really think that's it, to be honest.

Excellent post--the only part I disagree with is about Mario Galaxy. It's my favourite single-player game of the last three generations--yes, three, meaning including the N64.

With regard to the linearity, I just felt like they had finally managed to translate the sidescrolling formula into 3D. In Super Mario world, each level would have little sub-challenges you needed to pass in order to get to the end, such as finding a spring and placing it in the right spot, or finding the P switch in the Ghost House. In Mario Galaxy, they get you onto a small planet, and you have to catch a rabbit to get a star to warp you to the next, or maybe you have to collect the pieces of a star to advance. It was old-school meets new hotness!

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

I actually do think so, even though I'm fully prepared that they might not as well. It's pretty close to the end of the year, so I think they'll announce some stuff for the first half of 2009, probably nothing huge though. But I do think they have something else planned for the first half of 2009 besides Wii Sports Resort.

Well i think I know a reason to some of your disappointment with Mario Galaxy.

When Mario 64 first came out, no one had ever seen a 3D game before like it, every aspect of the game had never been done before, it was extremely fresh and fun. 10 years later we have Mario Galaxy, 3D isn't as new anymore and you have come to expect a certain quality from Nintendo games, It's just not as magical as the first game because it wasn't first.

Think of it this way, had Mario Galaxy been released for the N64 and Super Mario 64 now, Galaxy would be absolutely amazing and Mario 64 would be a downgrade, it's really hard to compete against nostalgia and when you really break down the two games, Mario Galaxy has better gameplay, controls, design, music, and everything, but your memory of playing 64 first will always give you that "wow this game is awesome" feeling that is now nearly impossible to replicate..
