Forums - Nintendo - Washington Post: Nintendo Is Star of E3 Show as Rivals Scramble to Catch Up

Being that E3 is a show for showing of their games to thousands of hardcore gamers. You would that Nintendo wouldn't have won with their bragging, annoucing dates for games, and showing a workout game.

August 1st 2007 (or any day of the year) Nintendo could invite a handful of major websites and magazines to their compound where they can wine and dine them, let them play the upcomming games to their hearts content, and give them a press package including good screenshots, videos and trailers; they will spend a fraction (1% to  5%) as they would at E3, get good press and get the attention of the hard-core gamers.

They have 1 opportunity to get the attention of the mainstream press before these products are released ... The New York Times and Washington Post will not send a reporter to Nintendo's compound on an arbitrary date to look at upcomming videogames.

The same thing could be said about FPS shooters. I mean really, how many FPS shooters do people really need? Can the industry really support so many FPS shooters with 20+ million dollar budgets. At one point during the Sony show I counted 5 straight FPS shooter games in a row. With the ever increasing budgets and stagnant base, something has to crack.

I think the mainstream media is just playing into the new craze of casual gamers, I mean it wasn't Super Mario Galaxy or Super Smash Brothers Brawl or Halo 3 or Killzone 2 that is getting all the attention, it's Wii Fit. A game that makes a person ask (well it makes me ask anyways) what kinds of new gamers it's going to attract and what will keep them "gaming" when the novelty of Wii Fit and the WiiBoard is over and they grow bored of the game. Will those "gamers" (many likely females middle aged and otherwise that go after the latest fitness craze) stick with the system and buy other games that take advantage of the WiiBoard like a skateboarding or surfing title when the novelty of Wii Fit wears off? I really can't see it.

Something about this entire casual gamer crazy has been bothering me and I could never figure out what it was and it's finally come to me, history is actually repeating itself. When I was very young my parents bought an Atari 2600 and my entire family played it because it was a new experience. Eventually though my mother and stepfather grew bored of the system and that was the end of their gaming for awhile, my siblings and I though continued to get new games and use it.

Then years later my mom picked up a NES with the light gun and super mario brothers /duckhunt and my mom and stepfather were fascinated with the light gun and with super mario brothers and we'd all play it and have competitions. They eventually got bored of it, stopped gaming, and it was my siblings and I left yet again with the system and buying games for it.

Now it's the time of the Wii with it's motion sensing Wiimote that is fascinating the non-gaming moms, fathers, grandmothers, grandfathers, etc (and likely mine this Christmas when they get one) and the WiiBoard that is doing the same with a subset of those non-gamers. Now I have to ask, what is going to keep their attention (say my mother and stepfather) for the long haul this time around where the original Atari 2600 and Nintendo super mario brothers/duckhunt failed? I can't help but think eventually when the novelty of these things wear off they'll become bored yet again and the videogame system of the day will be abandoned just like the previous two times. Only this time it might be a lot worse because many videogame companies changing over to get in on the attention and noise being generated by the casual gamers will be left holding the bag with casual games and the audience for them gone.

Anyways sorry for the long post but that's just what I think is going to happen. Please understand that I'm not trying to bash the Wii or anything, if I was it would mean I was bashing the NES which was one of my favorite systems ever, I'm just letting out what I think is going to happen. The casual gamers will eventually abandon us yet again and it may hurt gaming a lot this time (a boom before a bust).

Difference is its Nintendo leading the Casual charge, and so there won't be a bust right now because people know when they buy Nintendo games they'll get a good game and often a great game, the problem with the bust in the 80's was quality was bad across the board

Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

It was Nintendo leading the charge last time with my family with the light gun and duck hunt / super mario brothers as well.  And the bust I'm talking about has nothing to do with the one in the 80's that was caused by a flood of crap quality games.  Actually everyone just ignore that I said bust since it takes away from the message I was trying to get across and will only direct (or cloud) the conversation away from that message (I edited my previous message to remove the bust part).

And the Nes was hugely popular, then Nintendo went more hardcore in their games and more buttons on their controllers, and people left, now they are sticking with simplicity

Not enough can be said about fitness. Fitness is a huge industry. The equipment, memberships, and supplements can make it really expensive just to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Between Bowflex, yoga classes, and that gym membership, it's a struggle to keep fit. These things may not be important some of you guys, but eventually you'll get older, and other things become important. Your job may require you to be physically strong or you may want to impress that girl or guy. Or you may see that obese person next to you and do everything in your power not to end up supersized. By the way obesity is a problem in North America.

Why am I talking about fitness? It's obvious. It gets a lot of attention on TV. Pay attention to some of the commercials or news programs that airs. Then you will see how a little new item from Nintendo is getting some attention. And if you guys think that the Wii Balance Board is stealing the show right now. Just wait until next year when Nintendo starts their advertising campaign.

I have no doubt that it's going to be huge, I just have a feeling that eventually it'll have the same fate as pretty much all home exercise equipment with the masses.

Difference is most exercise equipment doesn't change, with Wii Fit you can just release new software for it, make it fun again

Mainstream press are not trying to sell Wii's, PS3's or 360's. They don't care about your favorite system. Not in that way anyways. Hardcore gamers don't read CNN or The Washington Post on a regular basis. Yet the mainstream now has an impact on the public's perception of video games. Wii has become a cultural phenomenon. Deveolopers are scrambling. Now a lot of people that never use to play video games see the Wii as something they would like to have in the house.

Sony and Microsoft can still be successful just satisfying their core base. They know Nintendo is on to something but to openly admit it, like how Nintendo says they are reaching out, might alienate their core gamers. The Wii is not your fathers video game system. Still fans of Sony and Microsoft remain jelous of Nintendo's unending success.

Very true. But, it's also why Microsoft and Sony shouldn't shot for this demorgaphic. They'll just lose. We can tell Microsoft doesn't have the right idea. No one cares about downloading children's movies and "Scene It"

I think Sony and Microsoft need to fight for the secondary console. Every house is going to have a Wii, and is likely to have either a 360 or PS3. They need to fight for those possistions. Becuase they are the ones who will enjoy the system, and be the ones where the money is.
