Forums - PC Discussion - What's a safe videocard temperature?

WOW, My laptop for gaming is the exact same, and I got it about the same time last year. Although it seems I've been running bioshock a little better. I really wanna know what people tell you about this dilemma since I really wanna be able to bring all the new games around with me on campus and not chained to the room.

I can link you up to all the things you'll need if you want.

Bioshock didn't run that horrible before, I usually got around 30 fps, but it would dip lower than that when things got busy.  Also the game seemed to have really weird physics, where I would be getting decent overall frame rates, but objects moving through the air would stutter.

Are you running XP or Vista?

Vista, but I forced an XP partition on it too where I do most of my gaming. It's not that big of a deal but I do like being able to play away from my desktop. I know It's starting to slow down with newer games already and I won't have the money for another such laptop for another 2 or 3 years.

Most of the high end cards like the 8800s and up are capable of operating at up to 100c but those are danger levels. Ideally you should be able to keep it below 80c even when gaming in SLI mode etc... If you're breaking 70 while idle you probably need more/better cooling solutions.

The simple fact of the matter is that cooler temperatures equate to longer component lifespans, and as a result overclocked components and overused components will die..and die much faster. How much faster depends on a large number of factors, you pretty much roll the dice, sometimes it pays and sometimes it doesn't =)

To Each Man, Responsibility

An overclocked card could range from 60 to 100 with 60 and up to 80 being perfectly safe (at least for new ones) and 100 meaning that either;

A: You have to clock back to stock frequency, or;
B: You need better cooling

Neither should be an issue with newer cards though, I haven't seen a truly heated gpu since the 8800 Ultra.

It would just seem that overclocking on a laptop is a horrible idea. I mean, the laptop has literally 6 different sets of airholes, but only 4 fans, also everything is crammed in together so the heat won't only affect the video cards. I mean, the outside bottom of my computer already gets pretty damn hot as it is.

Haha i know that's what I figured, but there's entire communities of people overclocking this specific card.  On two different laptop websites I've seen, there are 100+ page threads dedicated to people overclocking this card, and posting their results.  So I know there are a lot of people out there doing it.

Again, my performance increase is astonishing.  I'm thinking of getting a "chill pad" or whatever those laptop cooling devices are, to see if I can get my temps down a bit.

Well hell, I heard that the 7900gs is pretty good on the overclocking too, but I've been too scared on cutting its life short. I need it to last at least a year and a half more. But now I might actually look into this. At least I can play Spore on high....
