madskillz,

IF PS3 20gb was a COMPLETE PS3 it would have sold better ...
It may be a complete PS3 in ur mind but for customers things seem different. It is why they dont bought this 3/4 PS3.

And right now, considering the not bad sales in Amazon.com, it seems that the PS3 60gb is considered as a COMPLETE PS3 which is sold for 500$.

U can think what u want, since the sales show u that u are wrong.

u saied : "They won the PS2/Xbox scrap because of GTA exclusivity. That single-handedly killed the Xbox ... "

lol, Xbox was killed because PS2 has already win, there was no fight (opposite to now)
and, I am maybe wrong, but GTA andreas was released on Xbox too ?

The PS3 20gb was nixed within 6 months of launch. 6 months?! Think about this - had Sony kept with the 20gb version, the price would be $399 - directly competing with the premium 360. AND ... the 60gb would still be $499. I have had years of experience dealing with Sony and their products - the Walkman, the Discman ... and they smelled blood in the water and bailed.

Sales on Amazon are soaring? For how long? Yeah ... they'll soar until the 60gb B$3 runs out, and then ... back to the norm. Last time I checked vgchartz - right here on this site, the PS3 is STILL a distance third. The bump is temporary - some fools jump at a $50 price cut ... but it's a very attractive deal if you haven't been keeping up. 5 free Blu Ray movie - a $100 price cut - what's not to love? But to the informed consumer, the costs of hard drive space are way down, and it's pretty much the same as the 20gb version as far as costs. M$ is just laughing to the bank ...

As far as GTA ... it was a timed exclusive. That is what killed the Xbox. Why? If you had an Xbox, you had to wait YEARS to play GTA. YEARS. Several folks ended up buying a PS2 just to play it. Gamers will buy a console for exclusive content. Without GTA exclusivity, it would have been a completely different ballgame ...

@Relias - QFT ...

Sony is living off last-gen street cred. They have been shoveling crap so long, and really, really think they can win this battle. Sorry to say this, but ... no, sir. They have to pull a rabbit out of their butt to win this. The Wii is whipping them ... the 360 is steadily holding them off (until the 60gb B$3 sells out) and Sony is still clueless. Lack of exclusive content is what's killing the B$3, as well as lack of games. Who cares about 2008? Bring some games - sick ones - in 2007.

I am ROTFLMBO at folks - uninformed masses on Amazon.com - who will end up playing their 5 *free* Blu-Ray flicks into a coma because of a lack of good games. You can only play Motorstorm for some long, as well as Resistance ...

The games are coming out NOW....Lair ...Heavenly Sword....Haze.....Foklore....War Hawk...Rachet and Clank ....SingStar....Socom...Uncharted Drakes Fortune....Unreal III  are all of just the exclusive games for 2007. Thats not to mention KillZone 2 and Metal Gear that come out early next year and are exclusive.

so the games are coming and I would say by the end of 2007 Sony has an Advantage in exclusive titles.

You forget about eye of judgement

It's true that the 20GB PS3 plays PS3 games just as well as the others do. So, it is a 'complete' PS3, in the same sense that a car with no radio or A/C, but normal acceleration, gas mileage, etc., is a 'complete' car.

In fact, my car DOES have no A/C and a radio on the fritz; it is still a 'complete' car, and I'll keep driving it, but I wouldn't buy it from someone else unless I was desperate.

ROTFLMBO ... I had a car with no A/C ... in Mississippi. Dang, it was hotter than a hooker in church!

But ... I do think the 360 needs a price cut, but consider this - even after the Euro release, and the slight bump in sales, the 360 is still holding steady. A price cut would doom Sony.

Yeah, M$ is losing money, but do they care? They just want to win the war. That's all. And beat Sony. Look at M$'s history and you'll see they are all about domination. Not saying that's a good thing, but they are tenacious competitors.

I am awaiting the VG chartz ... it will be a big bump, but is it sustainable? We'll see. But even now, $499 is still a lot to spend on a system without several heavy-hitter games out yet. The 360 may be losing ground in Europoe and Australia, but goodness ... they are still selling systems and extending its overall lead.

If this next round of PS3 games aren't much more graphically advanced, why should a person on the sidelines buy a PS3 that will be discountinued shortl? It would be in their best interest to just wait it out ...

As far as the PS3 outselling the 360 - dang, the 360 has been out 2 years almost and the PS3 is still new. Give it some time ... the sales will decrease over time for the PS3 when the newness wears off ...

You have got to be joking you actually think the "newness" of the PS3 is helping sales? There are no game out ,The Price is too high are the only knocks on the PS3. Time will solve both problems by the end of this year Good games and games that CAN NOT be done on the 360 will come out. The Price is coming down may even drop again at Christmas time. Couple that with the fact that the PS3 is a reliable system that does not brick out on you and that More than makes up for a price difference , added value from Blu-ray playback Wi-Fi conectivity and the free online how  Can you make the argument that PS3 = more value for the $ add it any way you want a 360 elite is nothing compared to a 60gb PS3 but yet only a 20 dollar difference

I agree with the original posters point... They haven't lowered the cost of entry into the platform.
That said, I will buy one as soon as the October rush of games hits. I would buy one now, but the price cut was cheesed out and the lineup is still lame! I alrady have a Wii and a 360 though, and I'm interested in the few PS3 games that haven't gone multiplatform.

@libellule,

The 20GB model was not going to sell well in the first 2 or 3 months.  Early adopters have the cash and are interested so they go for the full package.  The 20GB model would sell just fine right now, and I guarantee there are people who would flock in droves to purchase it at the $399 price point.

The 20GB being phased out was either just another Sony blunder or deliberate.  I am not sure which but it was a mistake.

Nothing anyone has said or will say is going to change the FACT that this is a clearance sale...and a clearance sale is just a temporary price cut. This is just one big game of semantics and it ultimately does not matter.  Because even if they lower the 80GB model to $499 this still was not a full fledged price cut.

And what makes me laugh is that some of you guys so desperately want it to be what it isn't that you are in here screaming till your face is blue about a word game.  This boils down to two sides who want to use different terminology for the SAME THING.  The funny part is that no matter what you call it, it is what it is.

You folks remember to turn the lights out when your done....

==> what I agree is that 20gb may have made a good way if they have kept it.
Since the 20gb model doesnt exist anymore ... we will never know

==> yes but there are still, at least, 1M of PS3 60gb to sell in NA, so I think this offer will spread on several month (not going to stop in august for sure).
And, I dont agree with u, if they lower the 80 gb model to 499$ it will be a TRUE price cut ?

 What makes me laugh is that you actually harbor this delusion that anyone cares what you post.  You can use whatever semantics you want.  Sony cut the price by $100, deal with it.  Its still not enough to get me to buy one though.  I won't touch it until its $300 or less.

 I'm not going to get into this price cut issue, but I do want to correct something I think you missread (not that it was very clear to begin with).  On the quote you have there about if they lower the 80GB: I was only saying that lowering the 80GB in the future would not make this recent change a full fledged price cut. Lowering the 80GB in the future IS a price cut.... basically i am saying they are two distinctly different price cuts and one doesn't change the status of the other.  Not sure if that makes any sense but whatever.

The point I was making that both of you missed was just simply that if both sides of this issue use the most descriptive explanation of their views possible, they would find that its the same view.  So I am not sure why you are acting like I am anti-sony..cause I'm not. I'm anti-BS, and there was a lot of it on both sides in this thread.

 @Whatever,

The irony of your post is that you claim I have this delusion and then confirm that you do care just by posting about it.  If my posts are so inconsequential then I guess there would be no need to reply?  You can play hot sh** all you want, but it doesn't change the fact that this thread was going in circles because of folks like you with low reading comprehension not capable of reading a post before replying to it.  If you read my post again (you know the one that you even quoted), you will see I said it was a price cut...so yeah I will get right on "dealing with it" ...oh wait...I beat you to the punch.

Perhaps next time you should make sure the person you are arguing with doesn't agree with you already....oops!

PS - @lib, The lights weren't out and sadly still aren't out on this thread, clearly I'm not helping the matter but I am not an asshat who thinks I will lose "cool points" for making sure my views are clearly understood.  The "lights out" comment was mostly ment for the folks who were going back and forth and in circles on the issue, really only the first 3 paragraphs were directed at you, and in general I think the parts of my last post you took issue with were poorly written on my part, so I will take the blame on that point.

@sqr

I think I understand ur point about the possible 80gb price cut.

Whatever, I dont think there is a true way to close this thread.
Since I dont want to add more BS, I stop here my post.

I'm disappointed with Sony this generation and don't see myself buying their system at all. They came in with the idea that Blu-Ray and Wireless Technology etc. Would justify the price and purchase of a Video Game system. They found out that without a solid library of Video Games that most people didn't see it their way then they finally do something that shows they may be coming to their senses(announce a price cut around the time that they are going to be getting really good games) Just to find out that that is not nescecarily the case. They plan to use a Harddrive and a game and take away the EE and basically relaunch the system at the price of $600.00. So we're back where we were before. Hmmm... I would not be surprised if by this time next year or sooner we'll be talking about how great it is to get PS3 at $450.00 - $400.00 just to find out a week or a month later that they will be making 120 GB model with a game and no Backward Capabilities at all for $600.00. Just dissapointing. At least by then they'll have some games that would justify the purchase(Hopefully)

Sony did not nesisarily Want you to buy the PS3 right now. They were happy with the success of the PS2 and if microsoft did not force thier hand into the Next gen so early the PS3 would probably just be launching this holiday or next (07 or 08). The PS2 is holding its own still I aplaud Sony they made the system they wanted to make Blu-Ray is a Next Gen format and they decided to go with it since in a 10 year lifespan this will be more important in say 3 years.

I see alot of bashing of sony on these forums and others but the fact is has Playstation never runs out on you after 4 short years Nintendo and microsoft abandoned thier last gen and all the people that bought into those systems. Sony has stated they are in the PS3 for the long haul and why would you have any reason to distrust that. I have my doubts about the lasting power of the 360 and the Wii (to a lesser degree). I am confident my PS3 will be supported for along time.

All this talk of what will happen to price is annoying the fact is we do not know what the price will go to but for now the PS3 is $499 and will be for awhile then we will see what happens.
