I think that in the US there are quite a few people who buy a PS3 just for blu-ray and they probably do not buy it in Gamestop so that might be why Gamestop is experiencing a huge surge in sales.

haha it's amazing to see ppl actually doubt that a price cut is gonna boost sales a sizeable amount.

It's not that they doubt it is going to boost sales. It's that PS3 fans fear it is going to boost sales and seem to be willing the price cut to fail. They fail to recognise that healthy competition is what ensures prices are kept down and forces manufacturers to add and improve features to make their product more attractive. If this price cut does markedly improve 360 sales, there is greater chance the PS3 will be reduced in price. Maybe we could all afford to go multi platform then.
the ps3 will continue to outsell the 360. i think this 200 number is overrated. yes that was the price when the ps2 started selling like millions and millions but you still need a popular console to go with it. dreamcast anyone.

The Xbox/Zune division posted profits in the second and third quarters of their fiscal year. They had price cuts in Europe and Asia to begin their fourth quarter. These price cuts resulted in a 188 million dollar loss for the fourth quarter in their fiscal year.
Thanks for the input, Jeff.

Very true. It's not like the Xbox started selling by the tens of millions once it hit $150. Same for the GC when it was practically being given away for $99.
Of course the key difference for the 360 is that it has a solid 3 year library built up. Whether all those older games factor in to increased value perception remains to be seen though.
In the past, big, established library plus mass consumer pricing meant mass consumer adoption. Of course that formula only applied to the Playstation over the last two generations as the dominant brand.

I agree. The original Xbox dropped below $199 after 6 months on the market. It spent most of its lifecycle below $200. Of course a majority of its sales would be at this price point. The console manufacturer needs to be profitable at the sub-200 price point because these consumers will buy less accessories, games, and online services. It will be a problem for MS because they will be losing more money now.

itll be hard to tell the effect as sales will also increase due to holiday season
nintendo fanboy, but the good kind

Not suprised at all and NPD better get this month right is all I got to say. We have hard numbers percentage wise for GTA IV from these guys and they reflected overall well in the month. On a side note Amazon is no sales measure, ever.
